The HONOR Magic V3 is a book-style foldable phone that HONOR presented to a global audience at IFA in Berlin on 5 September 2024, after an earlier launch in China. Its pitch is simple and easy to check against the numbers: a large inner screen, a flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and a 5,150 mAh battery, packed into a body that HONOR gives as 9.2 mm thick when folded and 4.35 mm when open. This page is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, and it separates what HONOR states from what a buyer should still verify for their own market.

Place in the lineup

The Magic V3 sits in HONOR's inward-folding Magic V line, which competes with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series and with OPPO's Find N line. HONOR's press material describes the device as the thinnest inward-folding phone at its launch, which is a manufacturer claim and a moving target, since rivals have trimmed their own designs since then. In Europe the launch price was announced as starting at 1,999 euros; HONOR did not publish a US dollar list price in the material we reviewed, so none is given here. For the memory configuration, HONOR's regional page for the Middle East lists a single option of 12GB RAM with 512GB storage, and that is the configuration documented on this page. Later phones in the family are covered on the Magic V5 and Magic V6 pages, which is where to look if you want the newest generation instead.

Design and displays

HONOR lists three colours: Reddish Brown, Green and Black, with availability that varies by region. The Black model weighs 226 g according to HONOR, and the other finishes are listed at about 230 g on a regional page, so the phone is light for a foldable of this size. The height is 156.6 mm. The hinge uses what HONOR calls Super Steel, rated above 2,100 MPa, and the press release cites up to 500,000 folds with SGS durability certification. Those are manufacturer test claims rather than independent results. The phone carries an IPX8 rating, which HONOR describes as protection against fresh water up to 2.5 metres for 30 minutes. IPX8 says nothing about dust, so the lack of a first digit is worth remembering if you use the phone on a beach or in a workshop.

The inner screen is a 7.92-inch LTPO OLED panel with adaptive refresh from 1 to 120Hz, 1.07 billion colours and 3840Hz PWM dimming. HONOR does not state the inner resolution on the pages we reviewed, so we leave it out rather than guess. The outer screen measures 6.43 inches, is also LTPO, can drop to a 1Hz refresh rate, and has a stated peak brightness of 5,000 nits and 4320Hz PWM dimming. HONOR markets several eye-comfort features, including an AI defocus display aimed at reducing eye strain and a circadian night mode. As with all such features, they are software and panel settings that suit some users and are irrelevant to others, and the company itself notes that the phone is not a medical device. The practical point is that both screens are modern LTPO panels with high-frequency dimming, which is a real advantage if you are sensitive to flicker at low brightness.

Performance and software

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was the top Qualcomm mobile platform of its generation, and HONOR pairs it with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. That is ample for multitasking on a folding screen, where users often keep two or three apps open side by side. The phone also includes HONOR's own helper chips for radio, security and power management, which the company mentions on its product page. According to a regional HONOR page, the phone ships with MagicOS 8.0.1 based on Android 14. Because HONOR does not publish a single global update policy in the pages we reviewed, check the update commitment for your country before buying.

The software story is built around AI and multitasking. HONOR highlights Magic Portal, which lets you drag content such as an address or a file into the right app, along with motion-sensing controls, an AI eraser for photos, face-to-face translation and a notes tool. Some of these features rely on Google Cloud AI models and interfaces, according to the launch release. On a large foldable the more valuable parts are the ordinary ones: split-screen layouts, floating windows and the ability to continue a task from the cover screen to the inner screen without losing your place. Because the Magic V3 uses the full Android app ecosystem, those layouts depend on how well individual apps handle a nearly square display.

Camera

The rear system has three sensors. The main camera is a 50MP sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and optical stabilisation. A 50MP periscope telephoto camera with an f/3.0 aperture and stabilisation supports up to 100x digital zoom, according to the product page. The third camera is a 40MP ultrawide unit with an f/2.2 aperture and a 112-degree field of view, which also handles close-up shots from about 2.5 cm. There is a 20MP front camera that records 4K video. HONOR's regional pages disagree on the optical zoom factor of the telephoto lens, so we do not give one here. As always with foldables, the main benefit is flexibility: you can fold the phone partly open and use it like a small tripod, or use the cover screen as a viewfinder for the best cameras. HONOR makes no claim of beating dedicated camera phones on image quality, and we cannot confirm one without independent testing.

Battery and charging

The battery is the headline of the spec sheet. HONOR gives a typical capacity of 5,150 mAh, with a rated capacity of 5,050 mAh, and describes it as silicon-carbon, a chemistry that packs more energy into the same volume. For a phone that is under a centimetre thick when closed, that is a large cell compared with most foldables from the same period. Wired charging reaches 66W and wireless charging reaches 50W, but the wireless charger is sold separately and HONOR says it should be rated at 50W or more. HONOR does not publish a charging time or a battery-life figure that we can verify, so treat endurance claims with caution and expect real results to depend heavily on how often the inner screen is in use.

Who it is for

The Magic V3 suits someone who wants a foldable that feels close to a normal phone in the pocket and in the hand, without giving up flagship performance. If you read, work in documents or watch video on the go, the near-square inner display is a clear step up from a slab phone. If you want the best proven software support or an official US presence, compare it with the Galaxy Z Fold7 using the Magic V3 vs Galaxy Z Fold7 table. Another point of reference is the OPPO Find N5. The overall position of each model is shown on the rankings page.

Compromises

Taken together, the Magic V3 is best understood as a slim, well-specified foldable with a few honest trade-offs: a high price, a partial water rating and an optional wireless charger. If those fit your needs, the specifications are among the strongest of its generation.
