The HONOR X9d is a mid-range Android phone that puts durability and endurance ahead of everything else. Its headline numbers are an 8,300 mAh silicon-carbon battery, a 6.79-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chip and a 108MP main camera with optical stabilisation. On top of that sits a wall of protection claims, from IP69K water and dust ratings to a 2.5-metre drop-resistance figure. This page is a spec-and-information-based review built from the manufacturer's published material: it covers where the phone fits, what the hardware and software promise, and where the trade-offs are. It is not a hands-on test, and every number quoted from the maker is marked as the maker's claim.
Where it sits in the lineup
HONOR's X series is the brand's value-and-durability line, positioned below the Magic flagships and the numbered 600 family. The HONOR global site also lists newer X-series models such as the X9e s, but the X9d is the one with the headline battery, and its pitch is simple: a large, tough phone whose battery is far bigger than what most competitors in this class offer. If you want to see how HONOR's more conventional mid-range phone differs, the HONOR 600 page is the natural comparison, and the HONOR X9d vs HONOR 600 table lays the published numbers side by side. For the top of the range, see the HONOR Magic8 Pro, which plays in a very different price and performance bracket. The official page does not list a United States price, and the regional purchase list does not include the US, so this page does not quote one.
Design, build and durability
HONOR offers the X9d in four colours: Reddish Brown, Forest Green, Sunrise Gold and Midnight Black. The images on the product page show a large circular camera module on the back, in the middle of the upper half, ringed in a metallic finish. The Reddish Brown version is the most distinctive: it pairs a leather-style textured back with a gold frame and a gold camera disc. The official page does not publish thickness or weight, so we cannot say how heavy the phone is despite its large battery; that is a gap worth checking in a shop before buying.
The protection story is the main selling point. HONOR claims IP69K, IP68 and IP66 ratings. The IP69K rating is tested to ISO 20653:2023, while the IP66, IP68 and IP69 ratings follow IEC 60529. Among the described tests are hot-water jets at around 80 degrees Celsius, 24 hours of salt-rich humidity exposure and 10,000 water exposure cycles. HONOR also states that the phone survives drops from 2.5 metres on smooth granite, a figure it compares with the earlier HONOR X9c, and that an SGS triple-resistance certification covers drop, dust and water. The company is careful to add that protection can weaken with wear and that the phone can still be damaged by falls, and that it should not be charged while wet. In practice, these claims mean the X9d is aimed at people who use their phone outdoors, on building sites, in kitchens or near water, and want fewer worries about a cracked screen or a wet pocket. Tap-to-eject water and dust removal and glove-friendly, rain-friendly touch handling are also mentioned.
Display
The screen is a 6.79-inch OLED panel with a 2640 x 1200 resolution, which HONOR markets as 1.5K. The refresh rate is adaptive up to 120Hz, the colour gamut is DCI-P3, and the bezels are listed at 1.3 mm on the sides and top. The brand quotes a peak brightness of 6,000 nits, but it specifies that this applies only to full-screen video playback, so it should not be read as the brightness you will see in everyday use. The panel uses 3,840Hz PWM dimming, which the maker describes as flicker-free, along with eye-comfort features such as an AI circadian night display, hardware low-blue-light filtering and an AI defocus mode. As always, HONOR notes the phone is not medical equipment. For a mid-range phone, this is an upper-tier screen specification: OLED, high-frequency dimming and a high refresh rate are things you would not always get at this level. The caveat is that the refresh rate and colour gamut depend on app support, and brightness claims come from the maker's own lab.
Performance, cooling and software
The X9d uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, built on a 4nm process. HONOR says it delivers a 29% GPU and 11% CPU improvement, but those figures are measured against the X9c, so they say little about how the phone compares with rivals. The Snapdragon 6 series is a mid-range platform designed for smooth everyday use, social apps, video and casual gaming rather than the heaviest 3D titles. The official page does not list RAM or storage, so we cannot say which configurations are sold; check the exact variant in your market.
Cooling is described in more detail than usual for this class. The phone has a 3,490 mm² stainless-steel vapour chamber, a fifth-generation hexagonal graphite layer that HONOR says conducts heat 90% better, and a quoted total cooling area of 29,500 mm². Cooling matters mainly in long gaming sessions, video calls and fast charging, where sustained performance depends on how well heat is spread. The brand also says the phone works from minus 30 to 55 degrees Celsius for standby, calls, contacts and texts.
On the software side the page mentions HONOR's MagicOS, Google Gemini Live with camera and screen sharing (availability varies by region, and responses should be checked), AI writing tools and Magic Portal, with updates delivered over the air. The official page does not state the Android version or the update commitment, so those remain open questions before purchase.
Camera
The only rear camera that HONOR specifies is a 108MP main sensor with optical image stabilisation. The company notes that the full 108-megapixel output is available only in a HIGH-RES mode, and that the actual pixel count of a photo varies by shooting mode, which is typical for high-resolution sensors that normally combine pixels to improve low-light quality. The page also lists 4K moving-photo collages, an underwater photo mode and AI editing tools: an eraser for unwanted objects, an eyes-open fix for blinks, reflection removal, one-tap cut-outs and upscaling. The image on the back shows a camera ring with several elements, but the official page does not name any ultrawide or depth sensor, and it gives no front-camera resolution. Our assessment is therefore limited: the main camera looks capable on paper, but anyone who needs an ultrawide lens or wants to know about selfie quality should look at the final market specification. OIS on the main camera is a useful extra at this level, because it helps in dim rooms and with video.
Battery and charging
This is where the X9d stands out. The battery is rated at 8,300 mAh typical and 8,100 mAh rated, and it uses a silicon-carbon design, which allows more energy in the same volume than conventional graphite cells. HONOR claims three days of battery life in its lab conditions, which involve a volume level of 8, 150 nits of brightness and a mix of video, chat, reading and calls. It also states that the battery will stay reliable for up to six years based on 1,000 cycles and six hours of screen time per day. Wired charging is 66W, but it requires the original charger and cable, and real charging speed varies. Reverse charging is supported, so the phone can top up an accessory or another phone. For heavy users, travellers and anyone who dislikes carrying a power bank, a battery of this size is the most persuasive reason to consider the phone. The compromise is that 66W is not the fastest available: filling a battery of 8,300 mAh will take a noticeable amount of time.
Who it is for and the compromises
The X9d is built for people who rank battery life and toughness above benchmark scores: outdoor workers, frequent travellers, parents who want a phone that survives drops and splashes, and anyone who keeps a device for several years. The OLED screen and the cooling system are bonuses. On the other side of the ledger, the official page leaves several gaps. There is no RAM or storage listing, no thickness or weight, no Android version, no front-camera detail and no ultrawide camera named, and the 6,000-nit figure applies only to video. Wireless charging is not mentioned. The release date here is the approximate date supplied for this catalogue, because the official page does not state a launch date. If you are comparing it with other budget and mid-range models, the phone rankings show how it is placed on the numbers we track, and the comparison with the HONOR 600 is a good second stop before you decide.
