The Xiaomi 17T is the more compact of the two phones in Xiaomi's 2026 T series. It pairs a 6.59-inch AMOLED screen with a MediaTek Dimensity 8500-Ultra chipset, a 6,500 mAh silicon-carbon battery and a three-camera Leica system that, for the first time on a T-series phone of this size, includes a 5x periscope telephoto lens. Xiaomi presented the phone, together with the larger Xiaomi 17T Pro, in late September 2026. This page walks through the published specifications, shows where the phone sits in the market and lists the compromises to expect. It is based on the manufacturer's specifications and published information rather than on hands-on testing.
Where it fits in the lineup
Xiaomi's T series has long been the bridge between the company's budget phones and its numbered flagships. The recipe is familiar: borrow the camera branding and the fast charging of the expensive models, use a strong but not top-tier chip, and keep the price below the flagship level. The 17T follows that recipe at the smaller end. Its sibling, the 17T Pro, steps up to a bigger 6.83-inch panel, the flagship Dimensity 9500, a larger camera sensor, a 7,000 mAh battery and wireless charging. The standard 17T keeps the same telephoto idea but in a body that weighs 200 grams and measures 157.6 x 75.2 x 8.17 mm.
Xiaomi did not publish a US list price, because the T series is sold in Europe, Asia and other regions rather than through American carriers, so this page does not quote one. Anyone wanting a numbers-first view against last year's model can open the Xiaomi 17T vs Xiaomi 15T Pro page, and the step up within the same family is laid out on Xiaomi 17T vs Xiaomi 17T Pro.
Design and display
Xiaomi describes a flat aluminium-alloy mid-frame that wraps around the screen on all four sides, a "golden arc" decorative line on the back and a square camera island holding the three lenses and the flash. The phone is listed in four colours: Black, Opal White, Blue and Violet. It carries an IP68 rating, which in Xiaomi's test conditions means immersion in static fresh water to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes, and Xiaomi itself advises against deliberately testing that at the beach or in the pool.
The screen is a 6.59-inch AMOLED panel with a 2756 x 1268 resolution, which Xiaomi calls 1.5K, and about 460 pixels per inch. It refreshes at up to 120Hz, supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut with 12-bit colour depth and reaches a claimed peak brightness of 3,500 nits in a small highlighted area. Dimming uses 3840Hz PWM as well as DC dimming, and the cover glass is Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. Xiaomi also stresses eye-comfort certifications from TÜV Rheinland covering low blue light, flicker, circadian rhythm and intelligent eye care, while adding that the phone is not a medical device. The 120Hz ceiling is a step below the 144Hz of the Pro, which most people will not notice in daily use but which matters to some gamers.
Performance, memory and software
The Dimensity 8500-Ultra is built on a 4nm process and uses an all-big-core layout of one Cortex-A725 core at up to 3.4GHz, three at up to 3.2GHz and four at up to 2.2GHz, with a Mali-G720 MC8 graphics unit and an NPU that Xiaomi labels 880. Xiaomi quotes a 7 percent multi-core and 25 percent peak graphics improvement over the Dimensity 8400-Ultra, and those are manufacturer figures based on MediaTek data, not independent benchmarks. It is an upper-mid-range chip, comfortable with demanding games at sensible settings, but it does not match the Dimensity 9500 in the Pro for sustained heavy loads.
Memory is 12GB of LPDDR5X-9600 in both configurations, with 256GB or 512GB of storage. The specification sheet lists UFS 4.1, while a footnote on Xiaomi's overview page says UFS 4.1 arrives through a firmware update. A "3D IceLoop" cooling layout and a thermal gel of 6 W/mK are meant to keep clock speeds steady under load. Software is Xiaomi HyperOS 3, which brings the HyperIsland status-bar notifications, the HyperConnect cross-device features and Google's Gemini integration, including Circle to Search. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, dual SIM with eSIM support, an infrared blaster and an in-display fingerprint sensor. Xiaomi also lists an offline calling feature between two supported devices at short range, which depends on a SIM card and a Xiaomi account and is expressly not meant for emergencies.
Camera
The camera is the reason to look at this phone. The main camera is a 50MP Light Fusion 800 sensor of 1/1.55 inch with an f/1.7 lens, optical stabilisation and 2.0µm pixels in 4-in-1 binning, equivalent to a 23mm focal length. Next to it sits a 50MP periscope telephoto at 115mm equivalent, f/3.0, also stabilised, giving 5x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide at 15mm equivalent with a 120 degree field of view. The lenses carry the Leica Summilux name and a Leica-style tuning with two looks, Authentic and Vibrant. Xiaomi cites a 13.2EV dynamic range figure for the main sensor.
The periscope lens is the interesting part. Xiaomi says it is the first periscope telephoto on a T-series model with a display of 6.59 inches or smaller, and it supports a 10x optical-grade crop, a telemacro mode with a 30cm minimum focus distance and an "AI Ultra Zoom" that Xiaomi says reaches 120x. The company's description of the intermediate framing is a "master lens" system with 23, 28, 35, 46, 75 and 115mm steps. Video goes up to 4K at 60fps in HDR10+ and Log, with a stage mode meant for concerts and performances. Where the Pro adds 8K at 30fps and a 4K cinematic telephoto mode, the 17T tops out at 4K. The front camera is a 32MP unit behind a hole punch.
Battery and charging
The capacity is the other headline: 6,500 mAh, which Xiaomi says is 1,000 mAh more than the previous 15T and which relies on a silicon-carbon cell. Wired charging is rated at 67W, with a claim of a full charge in 58 minutes, and the phone also supports PPS charging at up to 50W with compatible adapters and 22.5W reverse wired charging for topping up an accessory. There is no wireless charging in the listed specification. The box contains a case, a cable and documentation but no power adapter, so buyers need to supply a 67W or stronger charger to reach the headline speed. Those timings are Xiaomi lab figures; real results depend on the adapter, temperature and software.
Who it is for
The phone suits people who want a flagship-style camera with real telephoto reach but find 6.8-inch phones too large. A 6.59-inch screen and 200 grams is still a big phone, but it is easier to handle than the Pro, and the battery is generous for the size. It is also a good match for anyone who values fast wired charging and a clean flat-edge design, and who is comfortable with Xiaomi's software skin. Buyers who regularly shoot in low light, or who want the extra headroom of the larger sensor, 8K video and wireless charging, should compare it with the Xiaomi 17T Pro.
Compromises to consider
- No wireless charging in the listed specification, and no charger in the box.
- Smaller main sensor than the Pro, and a 12MP ultrawide that is a clear step below the main and telephoto cameras.
- 120Hz instead of 144Hz and an upper-mid-range chip rather than a flagship one.
- Software support terms were not given on the pages we reviewed, so check the update policy before buying.
- Regional availability is limited, and there is no official US price.
The measured side of this phone, such as screen brightness in practice, thermal behaviour and camera consistency, will only be settled by independent lab tests. Until then, treat the figures above as manufacturer claims, and compare the full specification table on the main Xiaomi 17T page with the other devices in the rankings.
