The OnePlus 12R is built around one idea: take the parts of a flagship that matter most in daily use, namely a fast chip, a bright 120 Hz screen and a very large battery, and sell them at a much lower price than the top model. It runs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, carries a 5,500 mAh cell and keeps a 50 MP main camera, while leaving out the telephoto lens. The notes below are based on the published specifications and manufacturer information and describe what the company states, not independent measurements.
Place in the range
OnePlus introduced the 12R on 23 January 2024 in New Delhi, next to the OnePlus 12 and the Buds 3 earphones. According to the launch press release, it was the fourth device in the company's "R" series and the first of them to be sold outside China and India. The R phones have a clear identity: they are performance-led, with a spec sheet that borrows heavily from the flagship of the same year but with a few deliberate cuts. The US store lists the 12R from $499.99, which puts it well below the OnePlus 12 and in the territory where several competitors offer a mid-range chip.
The same naming pattern continued in the following generation, so the OnePlus 13R is the direct successor, and the page OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 13R lists the differences.
Colours, materials and the screen
The phone comes in Cool Blue, with a glossy glass back that OnePlus compares to a winter lake, and Iron Gray, which uses frosted glass with a brushed pattern and is meant to resist fingerprints. Both sit in a matte aluminium frame. The body measures 163.3 x 75.3 x 8.8 mm and weighs 207 g, so it is lighter and thinner than the 12 even though its battery is only slightly smaller. The US page states IP64 protection, which covers splashes and dust but not jets or immersion. The large circular camera housing on the back is a visual signature of the series.
The screen is a 6.78-inch AMOLED panel with LTPO 4.0 technology, a 2780 x 1264 resolution (450 ppi) and a refresh rate that adapts between 1 and 120 Hz. OnePlus describes it as the first LTPO 4.0 display, and says it reacts to swipe speed, so a slow flick may only raise the rate to 60, 72 or 90 Hz while fast scrolling goes to 120 Hz. Brightness is rated at 1,600 nits in high-brightness mode and 4,500 nits at peak, touch sampling reaches 1,000 Hz and PWM dimming runs at 2,160 Hz. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are supported, and the cover glass is Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The screen-to-body ratio is quoted as 94.2%. Resolution is full HD+ class rather than QHD+, which is a sensible choice for a phone that wants to keep the battery lasting.
Performance and gaming focus
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a year older than the chip in the 12, but it remains a high-end processor with an Adreno 740 graphics unit. Two memory options are offered on the US page: 8 GB RAM with 128 GB storage (Iron Gray only) and 16 GB RAM with 256 GB storage. RAM is LPDDR5X and storage is listed as UFS 3.1 on the spec sheet, although the launch press release mentioned UFS 4.0 for the 256 GB model, so it is worth confirming against the box or the shop listing.
Gaming is at the centre of the marketing. The company talks about an "S Tier" of smoothness, a TÜV SÜD "Precise Touching S" rating for two-finger touch stability and a 1,000 Hz touch sampling rate. It also announced a Genshin Impact edition developed with the game's publisher. The same dual vapor-chamber cooling design that appears in the OnePlus 12 is used here, with a stated combined area of 9,140 mm2 and a graphite "firewall" layer meant to keep heat away from the frame. The manufacturer's test data underlies those claims, and real-world behaviour will depend on the title and the ambient temperature.
The phone ships with OxygenOS 14 based on Android 14. A footnote on the spec page promises at least three Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates from launch, which is a clearer commitment than the one given for the 12 on the same site. Trinity Engine optimisations (RAM, CPU and ROM "vitalisation") and a TÜV SÜD 48-month fluency rating A are used as selling points.
Cameras
This is the area where the price difference shows most. The main camera is a 50 MP Sony IMX890 sensor with a 1/1.56-inch size, an f/1.8 lens and optical stabilisation. Next to it sits an 8 MP ultra-wide camera (Sony IMX355) covering 112 degrees, and a 2 MP macro lens with a working distance of about 4 cm. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, so the specification lists no optical zoom beyond the main lens; the page quotes a zoom range of 0.6x to 20x. The front camera has 16 MP and an f/2.4 lens.
Video recording goes up to 4K at 60 fps, with stabilisation, slow motion at 1080p and 240 fps, and a dual-view mode. The 2 MP macro sensor is a supporting lens, so buyers who care about photography should treat the main camera as the one that does the real work. The launch press release praised the IMX890 as consistent and high-performing, which is the company's view of its own choice.
Battery and charging
The battery is the headline: a dual-cell unit with a typical capacity of 5,500 mAh (2 x 2,750 mAh) and a rated capacity of 5,360 mAh. OnePlus calls it the largest battery it has fitted to a phone. Charging speed depends on the market: the US page lists 80W SUPERVOOC and a 31-minute charge from 1% to 100% under laboratory conditions, whereas the launch press release and some other regional pages cite 100W and 26 minutes. An 80W adapter is included in the US box. There is no wireless charging in the specification.
The company also advertises a Battery Health Engine, intended to slow capacity loss over time; this is the kind of claim that only many months of use can confirm.
Connectivity
The spec sheet lists 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX, LDAC and LHDC codecs, NFC, an infrared blaster, dual nano-SIM with eSIM, GPS on L1 and L5 and a USB-C port at USB 2.0 speed. The slower port is one of the small savings compared with the 12, and it matters only to people who move large files by cable. Audio comes from dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. An in-display fingerprint sensor and the Alert Slider complete the hardware.
Who it suits
The OnePlus 12R is a good fit for people who play demanding games, keep their phone for years and want long battery life without paying for a periscope lens. It also suits those who value OxygenOS and a clear update promise. Photographers who rely on optical zoom should look at the OnePlus 12 or a newer model instead.
Trade-offs
- No telephoto camera: zoom is digital only, and the macro lens is basic.
- No wireless charging: only the 12 offers it in this generation.
- Regional differences: the wired charging power, 80W or 100W, depends on the market, and the storage type is described differently by different pages.
- USB 2.0 port: data transfers over the cable are slow.
- Entry model: the 8 GB and 128 GB configuration is limited to one colour, Iron Gray.
