The OnePlus Nord 5 is a gaming-minded upper mid-range phone built around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a 6.83-inch 144 Hz AMOLED screen and a 6,800 mAh battery with 80W wired charging. OnePlus presented it at its Summer Launch Event on 8 July 2025, which is the date used for this entry because the official pages consulted do not give a separate on-sale date. This review is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information. Performance, battery and durability figures that come from OnePlus's own test laboratory are treated as claims rather than independent measurements, and OnePlus itself notes that actual results depend on software, environment and unit-to-unit variation.
Where it fits in the lineup
The Nord series is OnePlus's value branch, positioned beneath the numbered flagships such as the OnePlus 13. Within the Nord family the Nord 5 is the performance model, while the cheaper OnePlus Nord CE5 launched alongside it with a MediaTek chip and a larger battery but a lower-resolution screen. The successor OnePlus Nord 6 later moved to a newer Snapdragon chip and a 165 Hz panel, so anyone choosing between generations can line the two up in the Nord 5 vs Nord 6 comparison. Two memory configurations are listed: 8 GB of RAM with 256 GB of storage and 12 GB with 512 GB. The colours are Marble Sands, Dry Ice and Phantom Grey.
Design and build
The phone measures 163.41 x 77.04 x 8.1 mm and weighs about 211 g, and OnePlus adds that a pre-applied screen protector can add roughly 3 g. The company stresses an all-flat screen with bezels as thin as 1.65 mm and a slightly rounded frame, and it sells the body as unusually slim for a phone with such a large battery. The display is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, which OnePlus describes as exclusively co-developed. A programmable Plus Key sits on the side for quick access to functions such as sound modes, the flashlight, the camera and AI features including translation and Mind Space saving. One point worth noting: the specification sheet gives no ingress-protection (IP) rating, so buyers who need a dust and water rating should not assume one. The in-display fingerprint sensor, an infrared blaster and dual stereo speakers complete the hardware list.
Display
The 6.83-inch Swift AMOLED panel has a 2800 x 1272 resolution (about 450 ppi), a 19.8:9 aspect ratio and a screen-to-body ratio of 93.6 percent. The refresh rate goes up to 144 Hz, with steps at 60, 90 and 120 Hz. OnePlus lists adjustable brightness up to 800 nits, 1,400 nits in full-screen high-brightness mode and 1,800 nits peak, 10-bit colour (about 1.07 billion colours) and 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage. Touch response is quoted at up to 3,000 Hz instantaneous, and the eye-care pulse-width modulation runs at 3,840 Hz, which is meant to reduce visible flicker for sensitive users. Aqua Touch is included for use with wet or greasy fingers. A 144 Hz refresh rate is rare at this price tier, and the benefit is mostly in games and scrolling smoothness, since most video content does not need it.
Performance and software
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is paired with an Adreno 735 GPU and LPDDR5X memory, with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. A RAM expansion feature borrows 4, 6 or 8 GB of storage for the 8 GB model and 4, 8 or 12 GB for the 12 GB model, although this virtual memory is slower than real RAM. Cooling is handled by a vapour chamber with a listed heat-dissipation area of 32,207 mm2. OnePlus states that the phone can hold an average of 144 fps in PUBG and Call of Duty Mobile for five hours at roughly 30 degrees Celsius ambient temperature, using a 12 GB unit with Pro Gamer mode and Adaptive Frame Booster switched on, and it notes that Call of Duty Mobile runs natively at 144 fps while PUBG and Free Fire rely on frame interpolation. An AnTuTu comparison on the page was run in an environment of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius with Performance mode enabled, so it represents a best case and is not a typical result.
The software is OxygenOS 15 based on Android 15. OnePlus promises at least four Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates from launch, and the system carries a TUV SUD rating of A for a 72-month fluency test. Features include Open Canvas for split-screen multitasking, AI Writer, AI Perfect Shot, AI Unblur, AI Eraser, AI Reflection Remover and AI Reframe, Google Gemini integration and an on-device AI Search that OnePlus says initially supports English only. Some AI features may arrive by later update depending on the region.
Camera
The rear system has two cameras. The main sensor is a 50 MP Sony LYT-700 (a 1/1.56-inch sensor with 1.0 micron pixels) behind an f/1.8 lens with a 24 mm equivalent focal length, an 84 degree field of view, autofocus and both optical and electronic stabilisation. The second camera is an 8 MP OmniVision ultra-wide with an f/2.2 aperture, a 116 degree field of view, autofocus and a listed 3.5 cm macro distance. There is no telephoto lens: OnePlus lists 2x zoom from the main sensor and digital zoom from 0.6x to 20x. Rear video goes up to 4K at 60 fps, with 1080p slow motion at 120 fps. The unusual feature is the selfie camera: a 50 MP Samsung ISOCELL JN5 sensor with an f/2.0 lens, a 90 degree field of view and hardware autofocus, recording 4K at 60 fps. OnePlus markets this as flagship-grade front and rear cameras for low light. Since the ultra-wide is only 8 MP, expect a visible step down in detail from the main camera.
Battery and charging
The 6,800 mAh cell is the main talking point. OnePlus gives a rated capacity of 6,650 mAh (26.07 Wh) alongside the 6,800 mAh typical figure, and charging is 80W SUPERVOOC wired, with 18W Power Delivery and up to 55W PPS also listed. The page quotes test-lab results of more than 15 hours of YouTube, 10 hours of WhatsApp video calls and 7 hours of PUBG, with a headline claim of up to 19.8 hours of YouTube, and says five minutes of charging gives about 2.2 hours of YouTube playback. OnePlus also claims the battery will keep more than 80 percent of its capacity after four years of daily charging. Bypass charging feeds the phone directly during gaming to reduce heat, and wired reverse charging is rated at 5W. Note that the listed box contents are the phone, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable, documents, a screen protector and a SIM tool, with no charger named, so buyers may need to supply an 80W adapter.
Connectivity
The phone supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6 with 2x2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.4 (with aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, AAC, SBC and LHDC 5.0), NFC and satellite positioning across GPS, GLONASS, BDS, Galileo and QZSS. It has two nano-SIM slots with Dual SIM Dual Active support but no eSIM, and the USB port is USB 2.0 Type-C, so video output and fast data transfer are limited. Wired headphones need a Type-C adapter or Type-C earphones.
Who it is for
The Nord 5 suits mobile gamers and heavy streamers who want a fast chip, a very smooth screen and a big battery without paying flagship prices. Its four-year OS promise and six-year security commitment also make it a sensible choice for people who keep a phone for a long time. Selfie-focused users get an unusually capable front camera for the class.
Compromises
- Two rear cameras only: no telephoto, and an 8 MP ultra-wide.
- No IP rating listed: the specification sheet does not state dust or water resistance.
- No eSIM and USB 2.0: slower wired data and no digital SIM option.
- Lab-based claims: gaming, battery and benchmark numbers come from OnePlus's own tests under controlled conditions.
- No charger named in the box: only a cable is listed.
- Availability and price: OnePlus does not state a US launch price on the official pages used, so none is listed here.
