The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is a clamshell foldable: a full-size phone that closes into a palm-sized square. Samsung announced it at Galaxy Unpacked in Paris on 10 July 2024 and made it generally available from 24 July 2024. The notes below draw on the published specifications and manufacturer information, and they try to separate what Samsung states from what a buyer should weigh for themselves.

Position in the range

Samsung sells two foldables with very different aims. The book-style Galaxy Z Fold6 chases productivity, while the Flip6 is about portability and personality. In the United States the Flip6 started at $1,099.99 for the 256GB model, a figure well below its larger sibling but still at the level of a top-tier slab phone. It comes in 256GB and 512GB versions only, both with 12GB of memory.

Two changes defined this generation, according to Samsung. First, the camera was upgraded to a 50MP main sensor, which the company says puts it on par with the camera experience of the Galaxy S24. Second, it gained a vapor chamber for the first time on a Flip, aimed at sustaining performance. Samsung also claims longer battery life. The line has since moved on to the Galaxy Z Flip7, and the more affordable Galaxy Z Flip7 FE exists too, so the Flip6 is now mostly relevant to people buying second-hand, hunting discounts or deciding whether to upgrade.

Build, hinge and the two screens

Folded, the Flip6 measures 71.9 x 85.1 x 14.9 mm. Opened, it becomes 71.9 x 165.1 mm and 6.9 mm thick (excluding the frame of the main screen), and it weighs 187 g. That is only slightly heavier than many conventional phones, which is much of the appeal: it feels like a normal handset when open and takes up about half the pocket space when shut.

The main screen is a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel at 2640 x 1080 pixels (22:9) with an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. The cover screen, which Samsung calls the FlexWindow, is a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED at 720 x 748 pixels and 306 ppi, and it runs at 60Hz. That is worth noting: the outside display is smooth enough for widgets and quick replies but does not match the inner screen's fluidity.

The exterior combines an Armor Aluminum frame with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and a FlexHinge handles folding. The Flip6 is rated IP48, meaning protected against water immersion in lab conditions (up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes) but not against fine dust. As with any hinge, sand and grit remain the realistic concern. Colours at launch were Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue and Mint, with Crafted Black, White and Peach exclusive to Samsung's online store.

What the FlexWindow does

Much of the Flip's personality lives on the cover screen. Samsung says the FlexWindow was enhanced to support AI-assisted functions without opening the phone: Suggested replies analyse recent messages and propose a tailored answer, there are more widgets than before, you can view several widgets at once, and the music widget lets you select the next track. It also surfaces Samsung Health updates and notifications.

A practical way to see it is as a triage layer. Glance, reply, skip a song, check the weather, and put the phone back. Typing anything long still means opening it. With a 60Hz panel and a small canvas, this is not meant to replace the main screen; People who dislike constantly unlocking their phone for a quick check may see that as a feature.

Performance and software

The Flip6 uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, the same silicon as the Fold6. That makes it a high-performance clamshell, and the new vapor chamber should help in demanding use such as long gaming sessions or video capture, although Samsung gives no figures, so expectations are best kept modest for a thin body.

It shipped with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1. Samsung says the Flip6 gets seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates. Galaxy AI features highlighted for the foldables include Interpreter, Composer, Photo Assist and Note Assist, plus a Photo Ambient wallpaper that changes with time and weather and suggests layouts that suit the picture. Samsung stated that Galaxy AI features come free until the end of 2025 on supported devices.

Cameras and FlexCam

The rear dual camera pairs a 50MP wide-angle (f/1.8, Dual Pixel autofocus, optical stabilisation) with a 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2, 123-degree field of view). Samsung says the 50MP sensor supports 2x optical zoom for noise-free photos and AI zoom up to 10x. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, which is a trade-off compared with the Fold6 and with many slab flagships. Nightography was improved, with video HDR support, and Samsung added in-app night capture for Instagram.

The trick of a flip phone is that the main camera also serves as the selfie camera. With the phone partly folded, FlexCam lets you shoot hands-free, and the new Auto Zoom attempts to find the best framing by detecting subjects and zooming in or out on its own. The inner screen holds a 10MP selfie camera (f/2.2) for ordinary use, and there is no under-display camera on this model.

Battery and charging

The battery is a dual-cell unit with a typical capacity of 4,000 mAh (rated capacity 3,887 mAh). Samsung quotes up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a 25W adapter and 3A USB-C cable, sold separately, and the phone supports Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and Wireless PowerShare. It is a modest battery by slab-phone standards, so the Flip6 is a phone to charge nightly. Samsung states longer usage than before, without a hours-per-day figure.

The phone supports 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, two nano-SIMs or multi-eSIM, and has a side fingerprint sensor.

A note on everyday habits: a clamshell asks for slightly different routines than a rigid smartphone. You open it to make a call, close it to put it away, and you want to keep grit out of the hinge area. In return, the main display sits protected inside when the phone is shut, away from keys and coins. Samsung points out that water resistance is not permanent and can diminish with normal wear, which applies to any device with an IP rating.

Who should consider it

The Flip6 appeals to people who like a compact phone but still want a big screen when needed, and to those who care about style and colour. It also suits people who take many selfies and group photos thanks to FlexCam. Things to weigh

Anyone who wants more screen area rather than a smaller footprint may prefer the Galaxy Z Fold6.
