The Galaxy A36 is a mid-range 5G phone from Samsung's 2025 Galaxy A series. It sits just below the Galaxy A56 and above the Galaxy A26, and it combines a 6.7-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED display, a 50MP stabilised main camera, a 5,000 mAh battery with 45W charging and a promise of six years of software support at a launch price of $399.99 in the United States. This page is a review based on the published specifications and manufacturer information. It covers the phone's place in the lineup, the build and screen, performance and software, the cameras, battery and charging, who should consider it and what it compromises on.

Where it sits in the lineup

Samsung announced the Galaxy A56 5G, A36 5G and A26 5G together in early March 2025 under the banner of what it called Awesome Intelligence, and the phones reached markets from mid-to-late March. In the United States the A36 started at $399.99 and the A26 at $299.99; Awesome Lime was a Best Buy exclusive from 26 March. The A36 is therefore the middle phone of the trio. The Galaxy A56 sits above it with a more capable chip and camera, and the Galaxy A26 is a step down. The A36 was later followed by the Galaxy A57 in Samsung's next A-series generation. Above the A series, Samsung's premium range starts with phones such as the Galaxy S24 FE, which costs more but uses a flagship-class chip. The page Galaxy A36 vs Galaxy A56 sets the two A-series models side by side.

Design and display

The A36 has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung quotes a peak brightness of up to 1,200 nits in its high-brightness mode and says that the usable size is 6.5 inches when measured with rounded corners. The front and back are Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, and the phone is rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, which is slightly below the IP68 of the flagship Galaxy S models; IP67 covers immersion in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes. It measures 162.9 x 78.2 x 7.4 mm and weighs 195 g, and it has stereo speakers. The back has a raised vertical camera island in the style of the 2025 A-series phones, and the colours Samsung announced in the United States were Awesome Black, Awesome Lavender and, as a Best Buy exclusive, Awesome Lime. Other markets also list a white option.

Compared with an LCD-based rival at the same price, an AMOLED panel at 120Hz is a real advantage, because it gives deeper contrast and smoother scrolling. The display is not LTPO, so the refresh rate cannot drop to very low values to save power. The bezels are slim for the price segment, and the front camera sits in a small hole-punch cut-out.

Performance and software

The chip is the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 Mobile Platform, a mid-range Qualcomm processor aimed at everyday use rather than demanding games. In the United States the phone comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and other markets offer more memory and 256GB; the exact configuration depends on the country, so buyers should check the local listing. Samsung does not publish synthetic benchmark scores for this phone, and none are claimed here. What the specification implies is smooth performance for messaging, social media, streaming and photography, with limits in heavy 3D games and in very long multitasking sessions.

The phone launched with Android 15 and One UI 7.0. Samsung's support promise is its strongest advantage in this class: up to six generations of operating-system and One UI upgrades and six years of security updates. Few competitors at this price commit to anything like this. The software includes Samsung's Awesome Intelligence features, such as Circle to Search with Google, Object Eraser for removing unwanted elements from photos and custom filters. Some of the AI features that appear on the more expensive A56, for example Best Face, are not included on the A36, so buyers who are comparing the two should check which tools are present. Security hardware includes Knox Vault, and in the United States the phone supports Digital Key.

Camera system

The rear camera has three sensors: a 50MP main camera (f/1.8, autofocus, optical stabilisation), an 8MP ultrawide camera (f/2.2) and a 5MP macro camera (f/2.4). The front camera is 12MP (f/2.2) and records 10-bit HDR video. The stabilised main sensor is the key feature, because optical stabilisation helps with low-light photos and with steady video, and it is not guaranteed at this price. The 8MP ultrawide is modest, and the 5MP macro is a convenience rather than a serious tool; many buyers would prefer a telephoto or a better ultrawide, but neither is offered. There is no optical zoom, so zoomed pictures rely on cropping from the main sensor. Samsung markets Nightography improvements for low-light photography and Object Eraser, which are manufacturer claims and depend on software processing.

For everyday photography, travel snapshots and social media, the main and front cameras are the ones that matter, and they are well specified for the price. For zoom photography or for demanding ultrawide shots, a more expensive phone such as the Galaxy S24 FE or a flagship would perform better.

Battery and charging

The battery has a typical capacity of 5,000 mAh, with a rated minimum of 4,905 mAh. The phone supports 45W wired charging through Super Fast Charge 2.0, but the charger is sold separately, so users need to buy a compatible 45W adapter to reach the maximum speed. There is no wireless charging on this model. A 5,000 mAh capacity is common in the mid-range, and combined with an efficient AMOLED display and a mid-range chip it should deliver a full day of typical use, and for many people longer. Compared with the S24 FE and its 4,700 mAh battery and 25W charging, the A36 has a larger cell and faster wired charging, which is a rare case of a cheaper Samsung phone beating a more expensive one on a spec.

Who it is for

The A36 suits buyers who want a dependable everyday Android phone with a bright screen, a good main camera, long battery life and above all a long update promise, without paying flagship prices. It is a strong option for people who keep phones for many years, for families buying a first smartphone, and for anyone who uses a phone mainly for messaging, calls, navigation, video and photos. It is less suitable for mobile gamers, for photographers who need a telephoto lens, and for people who want wireless charging.

Compromises

The main limits are the mid-range chip, the lack of optical zoom, the 5MP macro lens that adds little, the absence of wireless charging and the IP67 rather than IP68 rating. The charger is not in the box, which adds to the real cost. In the United States the base model has only 6GB of RAM, which is adequate but not generous for a phone meant to last six years. For buyers who can stretch the budget, the Galaxy A56 adds a more capable processor and camera system, and the Galaxy S24 FE brings flagship-class performance and a telephoto lens. For people who want to spend less, the A26 offers a similar design and support plan at $299.99. Overall, the Galaxy A36 is a balanced mid-range phone whose software promise, display and battery are its strongest points and whose chip and camera set are its modest ones.
