The Samsung Galaxy A06 is one of the least expensive phones Samsung has put into its Galaxy A range, and it is built around a short list of priorities: a big screen, a battery that is meant to last more than a day, a fingerprint sensor, and a long enough software promise to keep a cheap handset usable. It is an LTE phone, not a 5G one; Samsung sells a separate Galaxy A06 5G with different hardware. This review is based on the published specifications and the manufacturer's own pages, and it separates what Samsung states from what a buyer should check against the local variant before paying.
Where it sits in the lineup
The A06 sits at the very bottom of the 2024 Galaxy A family, below the Galaxy A16 and well below the mid-range models such as the Galaxy A56. Samsung's India page lists a launch date of 2 September 2024, while Samsung's South African newsroom announced the phone there in October 2024 with a recommended retail price of R2,499 for the 4GB and 64GB model. Because pricing differs wildly by country and carrier, this page does not quote a single US figure; Samsung did not publish one on the pages consulted.
Memory options vary by market. Samsung's India listing shows 4GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, the South African release describes 4GB with 64GB, and Samsung's Africa product page offers 4GB or 6GB of RAM with 64GB or 128GB of storage. If you have a choice, the 6GB version is the one to prefer, because a Helio-class processor with only 4GB of memory leaves little headroom once several apps are open.
Design and display
Samsung describes the A06 as slimmer than the Galaxy A05 it replaces, quoting a reduction in thickness from 8.8 mm to 8.0 mm. The phone measures 167.3 x 77.3 x 8.0 mm and weighs 189 g according to the India specification sheet. The back has a fine vertical-line texture, two separate camera rings and a flash, and the colours listed by Samsung are Black, Light Blue and Gold, although the exact range depends on the country.
The screen is a 6.7-inch LCD with a HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600. Samsung's regional pages use slightly different wording, calling the panel PLS LCD on the India specification and a TFT U-Cut display in marketing copy, which refers to the small teardrop notch for the selfie camera. The refresh rate is 60Hz, so scrolling will feel noticeably less fluid than on the 90Hz Super AMOLED screen of the A16. For a phone at this price a 720p panel is normal, but text will look softer than on a full HD screen, and Samsung does not claim any particular peak brightness figure on the pages consulted. Samsung measures the diagonal as 17.13 cm for a full rectangle, or 16.73 cm when the rounded corners are taken into account.
Performance and software
Samsung names a MediaTek G85 processor, listed as an octa-core design with cores running at 2GHz and 1.8GHz. This is an older entry-level chip, and Samsung's own copy positions it for everyday tasks such as video, social media and casual gaming rather than demanding 3D games. Samsung does not publish benchmark scores for this model, and none are quoted here. Storage is expandable by microSD card up to 1TB, and the India sheet describes the slot arrangement as SIM 1 plus SIM 2 plus microSD, so the memory card does not appear to take the place of the second SIM.
On the software side Samsung's pages mention One UI 6.1 and promise up to two generations of OS upgrades and four years of security updates, with the usual note that these policies are subject to change. Samsung's India support listing also carries user manuals for both Android 15 and Android 16, which indicates that the phone is covered by newer software than the one it launched with. Features highlighted by Samsung include Quick Share for sending files between devices, Samsung Health, Digital Wellbeing and Google Meet integration. For security there is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that also supports a double-press shortcut, and Samsung Knox Vault, which Samsung says is certified to the EAL5+ level and isolates PINs and passwords in separate hardware.
Camera
The rear camera is a two-lens setup: a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a 2MP depth camera with f/2.4. The second lens only assists portrait-style effects; there is no ultrawide and no macro camera, so the A06 offers less framing flexibility than the triple-camera A16. The India specification lists autofocus on the main camera, no optical stabilisation and digital zoom of up to 10x. Video recording tops out at Full HD at 60 frames per second, with slow motion at 120 frames per second in HD. The front camera is 8MP with an f/2.0 aperture and fixed focus.
Samsung's marketing talks about crisp detail from the 50MP sensor, but individual results depend on lighting, and Samsung itself notes that results vary. In practice a 50MP sensor at this level will deliver pleasant pictures in daylight and weaker, noisier ones indoors or at night, since there is no stabilisation and the sensor is small. Anyone who photographs a lot should treat the camera as a convenience feature, not a selling point.
Battery and charging
The battery is rated at 5,000 mAh in typical terms, and Samsung's footnote gives a rated capacity of 4,855 mAh, which is the more conservative figure measured under laboratory conditions. Wired charging is listed at 25W, but the charger is sold separately in many markets, so the box may contain only a cable or a slower adapter. There is no wireless charging. Samsung does not publish an official endurance figure in hours for this phone, so the practical battery life depends mostly on screen use; the combination of a 60Hz HD+ panel and an efficient processor is a good basis for a full day and often more.
Connectivity and extras
The A06 supports dual nano-SIM cards with 2G, 3G and 4G LTE bands, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.3 and satellite positioning with GPS, Glonass, Beidou and Galileo. It keeps a 3.5 mm headphone jack, uses a USB Type-C port at USB 2.0 speed, and the India sheet does not list NFC, which is worth checking if you rely on contactless payments. Audio is mono rather than stereo. There is no official dust or water resistance rating on the pages consulted.
Who it is for
This phone suits a first smartphone for a child or an older relative, a spare device, or a buyer who needs a simple phone with a large screen, a headphone jack and a battery that lasts. The software update promise is generous for the price class, and the fingerprint sensor and Knox Vault give it a more secure basis than many unbranded rivals. It also suits people who want to add a microSD card for photos and music. If you can stretch the budget, the Galaxy A16 adds a 90Hz Super AMOLED display, a third camera and a longer update promise, and the Galaxy A06 versus Galaxy A16 comparison shows the differences side by side.
Compromises to know about
- Display: 720p resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate make the screen the most obvious cut-back.
- Performance: the MediaTek G85 chip and, in some markets, only 4GB of RAM will struggle with heavy multitasking and modern 3D games.
- Camera: a 50MP main sensor plus a 2MP depth sensor, no stabilisation and no ultrawide lens.
- Charging: 25W is the maximum, with the charger often sold separately, and there is no wireless charging.
- No 5G: this is an LTE phone; the separately named Galaxy A06 5G is a different model.
- Variants: RAM, storage and colour options differ by country, so compare the exact version on sale locally.
