The Google Pixel Fold was Google's first foldable phone, announced at the I/O developer conference in May 2023 and sold from June of that year. It opens like a book to a 7.6-inch inner display, keeps a wide 5.8-inch cover screen, and runs the Tensor G2 chip with 12 GB of RAM, a triple rear camera with a 5x telephoto and IPX8 water resistance. This page is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, and it looks at the Pixel Fold's place in Google's history, its unusual shape and hinge, the hardware and software, the camera system, battery life and the compromises that come with an early foldable.
Where the Pixel Fold fits in the lineup
Google presented the Pixel Fold alongside the Pixel 7a and the Pixel Tablet at I/O on 10 May 2023, took pre-orders at 1,799 dollars and began shipping the following month. Google's own support page lists June 2023 as the month it became available on the US Google Store. It was offered in select countries only and was not released in Canada, and US pre-orders came with a free Pixel Watch. In the Pixel family it was a separate branch: a premium experiment rather than a replacement for the numbered flagships, with a price far above the 899 dollars Google asked for the Pixel 7 Pro.
The line continued with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in 2024 and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in 2025, which makes the original the oldest foldable Pixel and one that is mostly of interest on the used market. The Pixel Fold vs Pixel 9 Pro Fold comparison and the Pixel Fold vs Pixel 10 Pro Fold comparison show how the design developed, and the rankings page places it on a common scale. Google also launched the Pixel Tablet at the same event, which addresses large-screen Android from the other direction.
Design, hinge and the two displays
The Pixel Fold is wide and short rather than tall and narrow. Folded it measures 139.7 by 79.5 by 12.1 millimetres, and unfolded it measures 139.7 by 158.7 millimetres and 5.8 millimetres thick. It weighs 283 grams. That shape is the product's defining feature: the cover display is a 5.8-inch OLED with a 17.4:9 aspect ratio and 2092 by 1080 pixels, so it behaves like a wide, passport-style phone screen, and the inner display is a 7.6-inch OLED at 2208 by 1840 pixels with a 6:5 aspect ratio, which is closer to a small square tablet than to a tall phone. Both screens run at up to 120 Hz.
Google lists peak brightness of up to 1,550 nits for the cover display and up to 1,450 nits for the inner one, with HDR figures of 1,200 and 1,000 nits. The cover screen uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, while the inner display is covered by ultra-thin glass with a protective plastic layer, which is a point to remember: the inner panel is not as hard as the glass on a normal phone and can be marked by nails or sharp objects. The hinge is a mirror-polished multi-alloy steel construction with a dual-axis, quad-cam mechanism, and Google states that it provides fluid friction across the full 180-degree range so the phone can stand in different postures.
Water resistance is IPX8, but the phone has no official dust rating, and Google's footnote says it is not dust-proof. The phone came in two colours, Obsidian and Porcelain.
Performance and software
The Pixel Fold uses the Google Tensor G2 with the Titan M2 security coprocessor, the same chip as in the Pixel 7 family, along with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and either 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. In Japan only the 256 GB version was listed. Tensor G2 is not the fastest chip of its period, and a phone with this price had less raw power than the best Snapdragon devices, but it handles day-to-day tasks and the large screen without trouble. Google's emphasis is on on-device features and camera processing rather than benchmark results.
The phone launched with Android 13. Google promises a minimum of five years of security updates for this model, a shorter commitment than the seven years given to later Pixels, and one that matters if you are considering buying a used unit now. The software includes multitasking tools such as split screen and drag and drop between apps, and a Tabletop mode for hands-free use. Other hardware includes Wi-Fi 6E in the main markets, Bluetooth 5.2, ultra-wideband and Google Cast, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, dual SIM with a nano SIM and an eSIM and stereo speakers with three microphones. One unusual limitation is that NFC only works when the device is folded. The fingerprint reader is in the power button, and Face Unlock is available as well.
Cameras
The Pixel Fold uses a triple rear camera. The main sensor is a 48 MP Quad PD camera with optical stabilisation, a 1/2-inch sensor and an f/1.7 aperture. The ultrawide is a 10.8 MP camera with a 121.1-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture, and the telephoto is a 10.8 MP unit with 5x optical zoom and an f/3.05 aperture. Google lists Super Res Zoom up to 20x. The cover display has a 9.5 MP selfie camera and the inner display has an 8 MP camera, which are fixed-focus lenses.
Rear video goes up to 4K at 60 frames per second, with 10-bit HDR, Cinematic Pan, slow motion up to 240 frames per second and a set of stabilisation modes. Foldable-specific features are the main reason to use the camera: the half-open Tabletop posture for hands-free group shots, the ability to use the cover screen as a viewfinder with the main camera for selfies.
The trade-off is that the telephoto and ultrawide sensors are small and relatively slow,. In daylight the results are strong; in low light the Pixel Fold trails the best slab phones, a trait it shares with its successors.
Battery and charging
The battery is rated at 4,821 mAh typical and 4,727 mAh minimum. Google claims beyond 24 hours of battery life and up to 72 hours with Extreme Battery Saver, which are manufacturer figures that depend on how much the inner screen is used. Fast charging uses Google's 30 W USB-C charger, which is sold separately, and Qi wireless charging is supported. The 4,821 mAh capacity was large for a foldable at the time, but the heavy body of 283 grams is the price of that capacity.
Who the Pixel Fold is for
It is for people who want a book-style foldable with Google's software and a wide cover display, and who accept the age of the platform in return for a much lower used price than the newer models. It also suits people who like the passport-like cover screen for typing and the squarer inner display for reading, web browsing and split-screen work. Anyone who wants a longer support window, a thinner body or the newest Tensor chip should look at the Pixel 9 Pro Fold instead.
Compromises to weigh
- Weight and thickness: 283 grams and 12.1 mm folded is heavy and chunky compared with later foldables.
- Update period: a minimum of five years of security updates, shorter than later Pixels.
- Durability: IPX8 only, no dust rating, and a delicate inner display.
- Selfie cameras: small, fixed-focus front sensors.
- NFC: works only with the phone folded.
- Price and availability: 1,799 dollars at launch, with limited country availability.
Overall, the Pixel Fold is an ambitious first attempt with a distinctive wide shape and a good camera system, and it laid the foundation that the later Pro Fold models refined.
