The Pixel Tablet is Google's tablet built around a simple idea: a tablet spends most of its life at home, so it should be useful there even when nobody is holding it. Google showed it in May 2023, opened pre-orders on 10 May and put it on shelves on 20 June 2023. The announcement bundles the tablet with a Charging Speaker Dock and describes two roles for the device: a tablet in your hand and a hub on the dock. This page walks through what Google said at that time and separates the facts from the promotion. Because the source is the 2023 launch post, some details may have changed since, and the post does not cover long-term software support or later updates.

Price, bundle and availability

The Pixel Tablet was sold together with the Charging Speaker Dock for 499 dollars. Google opened pre-orders on the announcement day in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia, through the Google Store and other retailers, and set 20 June as the on-shelf date. A Pixel Tablet Case, priced at 79 dollars, works with the dock without being removed and has a polished metal ring stand that lets you prop the tablet at different angles or hang it from a hook. Because the dock comes in the box, the price should be compared with tablets that do not include a speaker base. For an alternative with an S Pen and a keyboard ecosystem, see the Galaxy Tab S10 FE.

Design and display

The tablet has an 11-inch display and four built-in speakers, which Google presents as a good entertainment companion. Its colours are Porcelain, Hazel and Rose. The aluminum enclosure is textured with what Google calls a unique nano-ceramic coating, meant to make it easy to grip, and the edges are rounded. The launch post does not give the display resolution, brightness, refresh rate or thickness and weight, so these figures should be looked up on the current store page. What Google emphasises is the feel, the colours and the way the hardware matches the Pixel phones.

Tensor G2 and security

Inside is Google's Tensor G2, the same chip Google used in its Pixel phones of that generation. Google says it powers fast performance and battery life and is the reason the tablet works as an entertainment device for games such as Asphalt 9. For security, Google names the Titan M2 chip alongside Tensor G2, describing multiple layers of protection that keep personal information safe. Neither chip is described in benchmark terms in the post, so treat performance statements as general claims. The chip also powers the AI camera processing used for video calls, which we describe below.

Apps made for the big screen

Google worked with the Android team so apps such as YouTube, Spotify and Disney+ look better and are easier to browse on a larger screen, and the Google TV app comes preinstalled and optimised for the tablet to help you find something to watch. Google says more than 50 of its own apps are optimised for the tablet, including Google Meet. Meet adjusts lighting as you move around and offers HD video calling, and it can use 360-degree backgrounds, such as beaches and futuristic cities, that adjust as you change position. Google says the tablet's video chats are optimised moment by moment for where you are and how you are lit, thanks to its camera technology and Tensor G2.

Getting work done

The larger screen and Google's software features are also pitched at productivity. Google calls the Pixel Tablet the best Pixel device for editing photos with tools such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur. With split screen you can use two apps at once, for example dragging a picture from Google Photos into Gmail. Assistant voice typing, which Google says is almost three times faster than typing, helps with writing email. These are Google's own claims about its features; the post does not compare the tablet to laptops or to other tablets, and it does not mention a keyboard or stylus.

The Charging Speaker Dock and Hub Mode

The distinctive part of the design is the dock. It keeps the tablet charged and includes speakers with four times the bass of the tablet alone, according to Google, for room-filling sound. When the tablet sits on the dock it enters Hub Mode and becomes a hands-free home device: a smart home controller, a music and entertainment player, a voice-activated helper or a digital photo frame. In Hub Mode you can tap the Google Home icon to reach compatible smart home devices, see a video doorbell feed, adjust a thermostat or switch on lights, and the same devices appear in the Favourites tab of the Google Home app. Google also describes it as the first tablet with Chromecast built in, so you can cast videos or music from a phone to the tablet in Hub Mode. This dual role is the main reason to consider the Pixel Tablet over a conventional slab.

What the launch post leaves out

A launch post is written to sell, so it is worth listing what it does not say. It gives no RAM or storage options, no battery capacity or battery-life estimate, no camera specification for the front or rear cameras, no weight and no information about how long Google will provide Android updates for the tablet. It also names no stylus or keyboard accessory of its own, although Google says its Made for Google partners offer more accessories to personalise and protect the tablet. If you are considering a used or discounted unit today, these are the questions to settle first, together with the current software version and the condition of the battery. The dock, by contrast, is well described and is the part of the design that no other tablet in our database matches.

Who it is for

The Pixel Tablet suits households that want one device for streaming, video calls, photos and smart home control, and that value a tidy dock more than a stylus or a productivity keyboard. Those who want the widest choice of accessories or a laptop replacement may prefer Apple's iPad (10th generation) or a Samsung model; the Pixel Tablet vs iPad (10th generation) table lists the differences we can source. For a very cheap Android option, the Galaxy Tab A9 is another reference point, and our tablets section covers all models.
