The Huawei nova 14 is a slim mid-range phone built around its cameras for people and a big battery: a 6.7-inch flat-edge OLED screen with up to 120Hz refresh, a 50MP front camera, a 50MP main camera backed by a 3x optical telephoto, a 5,500 mAh battery and 100W wired charging, all in a body that is 7.18 mm thin and weighs about 192 grams. Huawei lists the phone on the same product page as a nova 14 Pro, and this review concerns the standard model only. It is a specification-and-information review based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, so camera, brightness and charging statements are Huawei's claims and not independent measurements. We look at the place in the lineup, the design and display, hardware and software, the cameras, the battery, who it suits and where it compromises.

Place in the lineup

The nova series is Huawei's younger, style-led line, positioned beneath the flagships. The Pura line, for example the Huawei Pura 80 Pro, and the Mate line, for example the Huawei Mate 80 Pro, carry the company's most ambitious camera and chip hardware; the nova 14 trades some of that ambition for a more modest tier and a more fashion-oriented identity. Its marketing leans on portrait photography, with the front camera and the telephoto portrait lens as the headline features, and on a design language based on a textured back and a new camera ring. For readers who want to see how far apart the two ends of the range are on paper, our comparison of the nova 14 and the Pura 80 Pro puts the published figures side by side.

Design and build

The nova 14 measures 161.73 x 75.48 x 7.18 mm and weighs about 192 grams including the battery. Those numbers matter because the phone has a large 5,500 mAh cell: seven millimetres and under 200 grams is a favourable ratio compared with many phones with similar capacity. Huawei describes a flat-edge screen design that gives a seamless feel to touch, and a new "Star Orbit Ring" camera module that houses the lenses in an oval island on the back.

Three colours are listed: Crystal Blue, White and Black. On the Crystal Blue and White models Huawei says the back has an "ice crystal" texture that shifts between light and shadow, and the product images show a frosted, patterned glass-like surface, while Huawei says the texture is available only on the Crystal Blue and White models. Huawei also lists a five-star drop-resistance certification, a laboratory rating from the manufacturer's own testing programme. The specification page does not list an IP dust or water rating, so you should not assume the phone is waterproof. The USB port is a Type-C connector limited to USB 2.0 speeds, and Huawei notes that the headset connector on the Type-C port supports digital headsets only.

Display

The screen is a 6.7-inch OLED panel with an FHD+ resolution of 2412 x 1084 pixels and 1.07 billion colours. The refresh rate goes up to 120Hz, and touch sampling reaches 300 Hz. Huawei quotes 1,100 nits of global brightness and 2,160 Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, a feature that is meant to reduce visible flicker at low brightness and be gentler on sensitive eyes, as well as HDR Vivid and AI-enhanced HDR for video. A global brightness figure rather than a peak figure is a useful detail: it is the level the panel is designed to hold across the whole screen. The bezels are slim and the display is flat rather than curved, which reduces accidental touches and is easier for screen protectors and cases.

Performance and software

The nova 14 uses Huawei's Kirin 8000 octa-core processor. The published specifications do not give a RAM figure, so memory is not stated here, but storage is offered as 256GB or 512GB. Huawei states that part of the storage is taken by system software, which is the normal situation. The phone runs EMUI 14.2, a version that Huawei's own materials describe with new themes, cut-out stickers made from gallery images, a double-tap on the smart-control button to open favourite functions such as AI Lens and AI Touch, and a privacy and security centre.

The most important practical point is the ecosystem. Huawei phones of this generation use Huawei Mobile Services and the Huawei AppGallery rather than Google's services, so app availability, login and payment options vary from the experience on a typical Android phone. Anyone who relies on specific Google apps should check the situation for their country before buying. Connectivity in the specification is Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2x2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.2 with the SBC, AAC, LDAC and L2HC audio codecs, NFC with Huawei Wallet and card emulation, and a full set of satellite navigation systems. The published band list covers 4G LTE, 3G and 2G; it does not list 5G, so check the regional model before assuming a 5G connection.

Cameras

The rear system has three cameras. The main one is a 50MP sensor with an f/1.9 aperture, a 1/1.56-inch sensor size and an RYYB colour filter array, which Huawei uses to let in more light than a standard RGGB filter. It is paired with a 12MP RYYB telephoto portrait camera with 3x optical zoom and optical plus AI stabilisation, and an 8MP ultrawide and macro camera with a 112-degree field of view and a closest focus distance of 2 cm. Huawei states focal lengths of 16, 23 and 69 mm and supports up to 30x digital zoom. A 10-channel colour-temperature sensor assists white balance. Video recording goes up to 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The rear telephoto is, for this price tier, the most interesting hardware: a real 3x optical lens with stabilisation is unusual in slim mid-range phones and is the basis of Huawei's multi-focal portrait feature, which lets you switch between wide, 1x, 2x and 3x perspectives. The front camera is a 50MP unit with 0.7 micrometre pixels, an f/2.4 aperture and a 1/2.5-inch sensor, which Huawei says captures 30.8 percent more light than its predecessor's front camera, a company comparison with the nova 13. Software adds the XD Portrait Engine with natural, delicate and stylish looks, AI Best Expression to choose the best face across group shots, AI Remove, and a number of shooting modes including night, portrait, pro, panorama, time-lapse and slow motion. As always, the quality of the results depends on processing, which we cannot judge from specifications alone.

Battery and charging

The battery has a typical capacity of 5,500 mAh, with a rated capacity of 5,400 mAh, which is the more conservative number. The battery is sealed in, so replacement is a service-centre job. Wired charging is 100W with Huawei's SuperCharge Turbo standard, which works only with Huawei's official charger and cable; the charger is supplied in the box depending on the market. Huawei does not publish a charge time on the pages we reviewed, so treat any figure you see elsewhere as unofficial. Wireless charging is not listed. A 5,500 mAh cell with a 120Hz OLED screen should deliver a full day for most users, but real-life endurance depends on how you use the cameras and screen.

Who it is for

The nova 14 is for people who care more about selfies, portraits and a slim, light body than about maximum benchmark performance, and who want a large battery that charges fast. It is a good fit for a first Huawei or a style-conscious buyer, and it may appeal to people who regularly shoot portraits and want real optical zoom on a mid-range device. It is less attractive for those who depend on Google services, who want a documented IP rating, or who need a 5G-confirmed device without checking the regional version.

Compromises to weigh

Overall, the Huawei nova 14 is a thin, light, portrait-focused phone with a big battery and very fast wired charging, and its real optical telephoto is the standout. See where it lands among other phones in our rankings.
