HONOR states 2 m drop resistance in its own lab test

The HONOR X9c is a mid-range 5G phone built around durability and endurance. HONOR's headline numbers are a 6,600 mAh silicon-carbon battery, a body just under 8 mm thick, a 108MP main camera with optical stabilisation and a 6.78-inch AMOLED display that reaches 120Hz. This review is based on the specifications and statements on HONOR's global product and specification pages. Where a number comes from HONOR's own laboratory tests, we say so, because those figures describe test conditions rather than guaranteed real-world results.

Where it sits in the lineup

The X-series is HONOR's value line, positioned below the Magic flagships and below the numbered series such as the HONOR 400. Inside the X family, the X9c follows the X9b and, according to HONOR, improves on it in drop resistance, scratch resistance, battery life and charging. Other siblings such as the X9d and the X7d cover different price points. The global page offers memory options of 8GB+256GB, 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB, and four colours: Titanium Purple, Titanium Black, Jade Cyan and Sunrise Orange.

Design and durability

HONOR describes the X9c as a slim titanium-finish design. It measures 162.8 x 75.5 x 7.98 mm and weighs about 189 g including the battery, which is notable for a phone with a battery of this size. The back carries a large circular camera module, which gives the phone a recognisable look. The specification page lists a 6.78-inch diagonal and a tall 19.85:9 aspect ratio, which makes it a large phone that is best handled with two hands.

Durability is a major part of the pitch. HONOR claims 2 m drop resistance, measured in its own laboratory against smooth granite, and says the combination of its Ultra-Bounce anti-drop design and the screen glass makes the phone more reliable than the X9b. It also says the screen glass withstands 3000 cycles of steel-wool friction. For water, the phone is rated IP65M, described by HONOR as a three-layer sealed structure that survives a 360-degree spray. That is splash resistance, not submersion protection: HONOR explicitly says the phone is not professionally water resistant, and the protection can decrease with daily wear. Treat all of these as manufacturer claims, not independent test results.

Display

The screen is an AMOLED panel with 2700 x 1224 pixels (about 437 ppi), a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz and support for 1.07 billion colours with DCI-P3 gamut. HONOR quotes a typical brightness of 4000 nits, but notes that this peak value applies only when matching video content is played full screen, so everyday brightness will be lower. The panel uses 3840Hz PWM dimming, which HONOR says meets the flicker-free definition of IEEE 1789-2015 for sensitive eyes, together with circadian night mode and dynamic dimming. Eye-comfort features are a real selling point for people who read a lot in the evening, although the effect varies from person to person.

Performance and software

Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, an octa-core chip with four Cortex-A78 cores at up to 2.2GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz and an Adreno A710 GPU. It is a mid-range processor, comfortable with messaging, video, navigation and typical games at moderate settings, but it is not meant to compete with flagship silicon. RAM is 8GB or 12GB, storage is 256GB or 512GB, and the page does not mention memory expansion, so assume none.

The software is MagicOS 8.0 based on Android 14. HONOR highlights Magic Portal, Magic Capsule and Parallel Space, as well as AI features such as an AI Eraser for photos. The specification page does not state the number of years of updates, so we do not give one. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac on 2.4 and 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, multi-system GPS, dual nano SIM and a USB-C port running at USB 2.0 speed. The older Wi-Fi and USB standards are places where the phone shows its price class.

Camera

The main camera is a 108MP sensor with an f/1.75 aperture, a 1/1.67-inch sensor size and a 1.92 µm pixel size when nine pixels are combined, supported by optical and electronic stabilisation. HONOR also mentions 3x lossless zoom, which the specification lists without any dedicated telephoto lens, so it relies on the high-resolution main sensor. The second camera is a 5MP wide-angle (f/2.2), a modest unit that mainly adds a wider field of view. Photos can reach 12000 x 9000 pixels in High-Res mode. Video recording is supported up to 4K, and the 16MP front camera (f/2.45) records up to 1080p.

Software features include AI night mode, an AI motion-sensing capture that uses the OIS hardware and an eraser tool for removing unwanted objects. The 108MP resolution requires entering High-Res mode, and normal shots use the combined pixels. As with most mid-range phones, the main camera is the part to rely on, while the 5MP wide-angle lens is more of a convenience.

Battery and charging

This is where the X9c is strongest. The typical battery capacity is 6,600 mAh, with a rated capacity of 6,500 mAh, in a silicon-carbon cell. HONOR claims a 39 percent improvement over the X9b and gives laboratory results of 25.8 hours of online video playback and 48.4 hours of online music in flight mode on Wi-Fi. Those are best-case test numbers, and mobile-data use will shorten them, but a 6,600 mAh cell in a slim body is a legitimate advantage. Wired charging is 66W with HONOR's original charger, and the page lists a charging input of 20V/3.3A. HONOR also says an armour-level battery coating and multi-point monitoring protect the cell, and that the phone keeps working from -30 to 55 degrees Celsius.

Audio comes from dual stereo speakers, which HONOR says reach up to 300 percent volume in an extra-volume mode compared with the 15-bar level of the same model; the mode does not apply to earphones or Bluetooth output. Biometrics include 2D face recognition and a fingerprint sensor, and a Type-C digital audio output is listed, with the earphone-jack availability depending on the market. These are supporting details, but they complete a phone that is aimed at everyday reliability instead of one headline specification.
