The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 is the clamshell member of Samsung's 2026 foldable family, and it is the lightest and thinnest Flip the company has made: 180 g and 6.1 mm thick when unfolded. It combines a 6.9-inch folding main screen with a 4.1-inch cover screen that Samsung calls FlexWindow, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, 12 GB of memory and a 4,300 mAh battery. This page covers what Samsung has published: where the Flip8 sits next to the Galaxy Z Fold8 and its predecessor, how the design and displays are specified, what the cameras and software offer, how long the battery is claimed to last, and the compromises to weigh. It is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, not on hands-on testing, and statements from Samsung are marked as claims.

Where it sits in the lineup

Samsung's July 2026 foldable launch had three phones: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Flip8. The Flip8 is the compact, pocketable one, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 is the new wider book-style model. The US page lists the Flip8 from $1,199.99 before trade-in, roughly $700 below the Fold8, so it is also the cheapest of the three. The on-sale date used here is 24 July 2026 from the launch schedule and may differ by market. Samsung's own marketing for the phone talks about being "the AI phone in your pocket".

The direct predecessor is the Galaxy Z Flip7. According to Samsung, the Flip8 is 8 g lighter and thinner (6.1 mm against the Flip7's 6.5 mm), has a faster processor, and adds a smoother hinge, a re-tuned FlexWindow interface and updated Galaxy AI features. The Galaxy Z Flip8 vs Galaxy Z Flip7 page shows the numbers next to each other. For a clamshell from another brand, the Motorola Razr Ultra (2025) is the nearest rival on this site, with a different approach to the cover screen.

Design and durability

The Flip8 uses an Armor Aluminum frame and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the cover screen, with an Armor FlexHinge that Samsung says reduces friction so that the phone opens and closes more smoothly. The inner bezel and the edge of the phone have a bevelled slope that is meant to create a gap for the fingertip, making it easier to open with one hand. At 180 g and 6.1 mm unfolded, it is thin and light for a foldable, and as a clamshell it folds down to a compact square. The phone has an IP48 rating, which covers immersion in water to a limited depth but protects only against objects larger than 1 mm, so it does not guarantee dust resistance.

The colours are Pink, Graphite and Cream, plus a Samsung.com-only Mint. Samsung also sells Flipsuit cases that come with interactive cards: the card changes the cover-screen background to match the design printed on it. Magnet cases with a built-in ring support aligned wireless charging. There is no microSD slot, and the phone supports a nano SIM plus an eSIM.

Displays

The main screen measures 6.9 inches in the full rectangle (6.8 inches accounting for the rounded corners) and folds along a vertical hinge. The cover screen, FlexWindow, is 4.1 inches (4.0 inches with the rounded corners), a large area for a clamshell. Samsung gives a peak brightness of 2,600 nits and says its mDNIe technology improves colour and light reproduction. The pages reviewed do not list the panel technology for each screen, resolution or refresh rates, so those details cannot be stated here; Samsung's foldable screens have used Dynamic AMOLED 2X in the past, but for the Flip8 that is not confirmed in the sources used.

FlexWindow is where much of the Flip8's personality lies. With One UI 9, the cover-screen layout is meant to match the home screen, so widgets such as Gallery, Weather, Health and Calendar can be moved, added or removed directly on the cover, and the app tray can be reached as easily as on the main screen. A mirror view lets you use the cover screen as a live viewfinder at up to 120 frames per second, with zoom and edge lighting, and Flip Shot lets you display a picture, animation or text on the cover while taking mirror selfies.

Performance and software

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy is the same chip family used across Samsung's flagship line. Compared with the Flip7, Samsung claims 43 percent faster AI (NPU) performance, 41 percent faster CPU performance and 11 percent better graphics performance. Those are manufacturer figures. Memory is 12 GB for both storage options, 256 GB and 512 GB. The software is One UI 9 based on Android 17. Galaxy AI features highlighted on the Flip8 are Photo Assist, which edits images from a written prompt, and Now Brief, which gives personalised summaries of schedule, weather and health on FlexWindow and now adds buttons that suggest actions such as creating a card for a friend's birthday. Samsung states that some features need a Samsung account, and availability differs by country and language. The pages reviewed for the Flip8 do not state the number of promised OS upgrades, so check Samsung's current policy in your region.

Camera

The rear cameras are a 50 MP wide and a 12 MP ultrawide, with 2x optical-quality zoom from the high-resolution sensor. There is no telephoto lens. The main screen has a 10 MP camera for selfies and calls. The Flip form factor's trick is FlexCam: with the phone partly folded or fully folded, the rear cameras can be used for selfies with the cover screen as the viewfinder, and Dual Recording splits a video between the cover screen and the main screen so that both photographer and subject see the shot. Samsung also highlights an AI-powered bokeh effect for portrait pictures, Super Steady video stabilisation with Horizontal Lock to keep footage level, and the ProVisual Engine for night video.

Battery and charging

The battery has a typical capacity of 4,300 mAh and a rated capacity of 4,174 mAh. Samsung claims up to 31 hours of video playback, tested in its own laboratory under defined conditions, which is the longest figure of the three new foldables on its US page. A charging speed is not given in the material reviewed, so no wattage is stated here. As always, real use with heavy cover-screen activity, mobile data and gaming will deliver less than the laboratory number.

Who it is for

The Flip8 suits people who want a phone that is small enough for a pocket or a small bag, who like expressive customisation and mirror-style selfies, and who do not need a telephoto lens. It is also the more affordable route into foldables from Samsung's current line. People who mostly want a large work screen should look at the Fold8 or Fold8 Ultra, and those who simply want the best cameras at the lowest price will usually be better served by a conventional flagship such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Compromises to consider

In short, the Galaxy Z Flip8 is a lighter, thinner and faster clamshell than its predecessor, with a bigger focus on the cover screen and personalisation, at a price that is high but clearly below the Fold models.
