The Samsung Galaxy A15 is the phone that opened Samsung's 2024 A-series generation at the cheap end. Introduced in December 2023 and sold in both 5G and LTE versions, it is meant to give first-time buyers, families and anyone who simply wants a dependable second phone a bright AMOLED screen, a battery that lasts, and a software promise that is unusually long for the price. This review looks mainly at the 5G model, using the published specifications and Samsung's own announcements, and it points out where a regional listing differs from another.

Where it sits in the lineup

The A15 is Samsung's entry-level offer of its time. One step up is the Galaxy A25, which adds a faster Exynos chip, a 120Hz screen and a camera with optical stabilisation. Later phones in the same family continue the recipe: the Galaxy A16 replaced it at the bottom, and the Galaxy A17 followed after that. A shopper looking at an A15 today is usually buying cheaply second-hand or from remaining stock, and the Galaxy A15 vs Galaxy A16 page shows what the next generation changed.

Samsung's own newsrooms give the timing. The pair was announced in Vietnam on 11 December 2023, the Indian product page lists a launch date of 26 December 2023, and Samsung India said sales would begin on 1 January 2024. Pricing is local: in the Philippines Samsung listed the 5G A15 from 10,990 pesos for the 4GB and 128GB model. This page does not show a United States price because we found no official launch figure.

Design and screen

Samsung describes the back as "glastic", a glass-look plastic with a haze finish, and highlights a "key island" on the side where the volume and power keys sit in a raised group, plus a flat, linear camera housing meant to give a better grip. The India listing gives the size as 160.1 x 76.8 x 8.4 mm and the weight as 200 g. Colours differ by market: Blue Black, Blue and Light Blue in India, with a Yellow option shown by Samsung in other regions. Samsung's official renders show a drop-style notch for the selfie camera and a noticeable bottom bezel, which is typical at this price.

The display is a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED panel at 1080 x 2340 pixels, with a 90Hz refresh rate. Samsung states up to 800 nits of brightness and a Vision Booster function that raises visibility in sunlight, plus a low blue light mode certified for eye comfort. For a phone in this class, an AMOLED screen is the main selling point: it brings deep blacks, strong colour and good contrast that LCD rivals at the same price rarely match. The 90Hz rate makes scrolling feel smoother than on a 60Hz screen but lower than the 120Hz of the A25.

Performance and software

Samsung India states that the 5G model uses the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ processor, an octa-core chip with two faster cores at 2.2GHz and six at 2GHz according to the specification page. Samsung's Philippines newsroom names the part MT6835. Memory depends on the country: 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB of storage, and a microSD card up to 1TB can be added. The microSD card shares the second SIM tray, so you choose between two SIM cards and one SIM plus a card.

The phone launched with One UI 6 based on Android 14, and Samsung promises up to four generations of operating-system upgrades and up to five years of security updates. That commitment is the most distinctive thing about the A15; very few phones at this price promise to be supported for that long. Samsung also fits its Knox Vault security chip, certified to the EAL5+ level, to protect PINs and passwords, and adds Knox features such as Auto Blocker and Secure Folder. Expect smooth everyday use from the 8GB version; the 4GB versions will feel more cramped when many apps are open at once.

Cameras

The back carries a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture and autofocus, a 5MP ultrawide camera at f/2.2 and a 2MP macro camera at f/2.4. There is no optical stabilisation; Samsung relies on video digital image stabilisation, called VDIS, to calm video. Digital zoom goes up to 10x. Video is limited to Full HD at 30 frames per second, with slow motion at 120 frames per second in HD. The 13MP front camera has an f/2.0 lens with fixed focus.

In good light the main camera should deliver clean, bright snapshots, and the ultrawide is a welcome extra for group shots and landscapes even at only 5MP. The 2MP macro is mainly there to fill a slot. Night photography is where the lack of stabilisation and the modest sensor will show their limits, and the absence of 4K video will matter to anyone who shoots a lot of footage.

Battery and charging

The battery is 5,000 mAh (typical) and Samsung says it is good for up to two days. A footnote on the India page puts the rated minimum capacity at 4,900 mAh, which is how typical values are defined. Samsung's own figures list up to 19 hours of internet use, up to 21 hours of video playback, up to 106 hours of audio playback and up to 44 hours of talk time, all measured under laboratory conditions. Charging runs at 25W, which Samsung markets as Super Fast Charging. Wireless charging is not listed.

Connectivity and extras

The A15 5G supports a long list of 5G sub-6 bands, plus 4G, 3G and 2G. Wi-Fi is 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac on both bands, Bluetooth is version 5.3, and the USB-C port runs at USB 2.0 speeds, so file transfers are slow. A 3.5mm headphone jack is included and the phone uses GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo and QZSS. NFC does not appear in the India listing, so contactless payment depends on the market and variant; check this before relying on it. Stereo speakers are not listed either, and an in-display fingerprint reader is absent: the fingerprint sensor sits in the side key.

Who it is for

This phone suits someone who wants a bright screen, solid battery life and long software support without spending much: a first smartphone for a teenager, a phone for a parent, or a dependable spare. It also makes sense in countries where Samsung's service network and repair options are a priority. Those who take a lot of photos, play demanding games or want smoother scrolling should look one step up at the Galaxy A25 or at the Galaxy A35.

Compromises

Within these limits the Galaxy A15 is a sensible low-cost phone with a good screen and an excellent update commitment. For wider context, check the rankings.
