The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 is a slim fitness band with a 1.62-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 150-plus sports modes, 5 ATM water resistance and a claimed battery life of up to 21 days. It is not a smartwatch in the full sense: the specification pages list no app store, speaker or microphone, and it is built around tracking, notifications and simple tools, paired with the Mi Fitness app on a phone. This page covers the published specifications, what is new compared with earlier bands, and the compromises of this class, based on manufacturer information rather than hands-on testing.

Where it sits in the lineup

Xiaomi's Smart Band line is aimed at buyers who want day-and-night tracking at a modest size and a long battery life instead of a full wrist computer. The Smart Band 9 sits below the company's watches and is succeeded in the range by the Xiaomi Smart Band 10; the Smart Band 9 vs Smart Band 10 page shows how the two differ. For a sense of what a full smartwatch adds, the Galaxy Watch8 is a useful reference point, and you can see the gap in the Smart Band 9 vs Galaxy Watch8 comparison. Xiaomi also notes that straps from the previous band generation fit thanks to the same quick-release mechanism.

Design and display

The band measures 46.53 x 21.63 x 10.95 mm and weighs 15.8 g without the strap. The thickness figure excludes the heart-rate sensor bump. For the first time in the series, Xiaomi uses aluminium alloy frames in different colours: Midnight Black, Glacier Silver, Mystic Rose, Arctic Blue and Titan Gray. Each band ships with a TPU strap in the matching colour, sized for wrists from 135 to 210 mm, and the company offers seven new optional straps, including chain, magnetic, braided and metal designs, as well as a pendant accessory and a running clip. Those extras are sold separately.

The screen is a 1.62-inch AMOLED touch display at 192 x 490 pixels. Xiaomi explains that the pill-shaped panel sits within a rectangle and the size is measured along that rectangle's diagonal. Peak brightness is stated at up to 1200 nits, the refresh rate is 60 Hz, and an ambient light sensor adjusts brightness automatically. The firmware also tries to reduce accidental touches when the screen is wet from sweat or rain. Over 200 watch faces are available in the Mi Fitness app, and photos from the phone gallery can be used as faces.

Health and sports tracking

The sensor set listed is an accelerometer, a gyroscope, an optical heart-rate sensor and an ambient light sensor. Xiaomi says the monitoring module was upgraded and claims a 16 percent improvement in heart-rate accuracy compared with the Smart Band 8, measured in its own laboratory. The band offers all-day heart-rate monitoring with alerts for unusually high or low readings, all-day blood oxygen tracking with a vibration alert at low values, all-day stress monitoring, breathing exercises and menstrual-cycle prediction. Sleep tracking identifies sleep stages, with optional REM monitoring and sleep-cycle analysis in the app, plus tips derived from the data.

More than 150 sports modes are supported, with metrics such as VO2 max, recovery time and training load. Xiaomi adds ten on-wrist running courses and a vitality-points system that converts seven days of moderate-to-vigorous activity into a score. The band has a 5 ATM rating, which Xiaomi says was certified by TUV SUD to the GB/T 30106:2013 standard and corresponds to a depth of 50 metres. The company warns against hot showers, saunas and fast water sports, and recommends not wearing leather or braided straps in the water. The specification pages do not list a built-in GPS, so outdoor routes rely on the phone. The specification pages also stress that the band is not a medical device and that readings are for reference only.

Battery and charging

The battery has a nominal capacity of 233 mAh and charges through a magnetic cable in about one hour. Xiaomi gives three endurance figures from its own test conditions: up to 21 days in typical use, 9 days with the always-on display, and 6.6 days under heavy load with continuous heart-rate, stress and blood-oxygen monitoring switched on. The typical figure assumes heart-rate sampling every 30 minutes, 100 notifications and some tracked workouts per week, so heavier use will land closer to the lower numbers. A linear vibration motor provides 20 vibration patterns for alarms and alerts.

Software and compatibility

The band works with the Mi Fitness app on phones running Android 8.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later. Functions include notifications, music control on some phones, alarms, timer, stopwatch, flashlight, weather, find-my-phone, world clock, a remote camera shutter on supported phones, and calendar events on Xiaomi and Redmi phones. Since no speaker, microphone or app store is listed, calls and voice assistants appear to be outside its scope.

Everyday use and extras

Beyond tracking, the band tries to be useful in small ways. Xiaomi lists a necklace mode for use with the pendant accessory, in which the band shows the time and counts steps but switches off heart-rate and sport functions, and notes that step accuracy can drift when worn as a pendant. A Sleep Animal feature analyses recent sleep duration, stress and exercise and presents the result as a character, while the app adds focus timers, to-do lists and weather updates. The running clip, sold separately, reports 13 running metrics such as cadence, stride length and ground-contact time ratio; Xiaomi advises against using the new clip with the older Smart Band 8 because of the size difference. Loose straps can distort heart-rate, blood-oxygen and sleep data, so a snug fit matters more than the strap material.

Who it is for

This band suits first-time buyers, people who want to track sleep and daily activity without charging every night, swimmers who want a light device, and anyone who prefers to swap straps for style. Because the screen is larger and brighter than on many earlier bands, it also reads well outdoors.

Compromises to weigh

In short, the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 is a lightweight, long-lasting tracker with a large bright screen and a wide strap range. It is a good fit for buyers who value simplicity and battery life, and less so for those who want maps, apps or calls on the wrist.
