The Huawei Watch GT 5 is a round smartwatch aimed at everyday wear with a strong sports side. It comes in a 46 mm and a 41 mm size, uses an AMOLED screen with a stainless steel front case, tracks position with dual-band satellite navigation and carries Huawei's TruSense health sensing system. Huawei rates the battery at up to 14 days on the larger watch and up to 7 days on the smaller one in its own maximum-use test. The watch was introduced in September 2024 as part of the GT 5 family. This page is a specification-and-information review based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, covering where the watch sits in the range, how it is built, what it offers for training and health, how long it lasts and what the trade-offs are.

Place in the range

The GT 5 was launched alongside a GT 5 Pro, which swaps the stainless steel for titanium and ceramic and adds features such as freediving support. The standard GT 5 is the more affordable and lighter choice, and Huawei's own comparison shows it adding route navigation with an offline map, running form analysis, the TruSense system and on-watch keyboard input compared with the earlier GT 4. Newer generations followed, including the Huawei Watch GT 6 and the Huawei Watch GT 7, so the GT 5 is now best seen as the previous generation. Huawei did not publish a United States price on the pages used here, so none is given. For a spec-for-spec look at a mainstream rival, see the Huawei Watch GT 5 vs Galaxy Watch8 comparison.

Sizes, materials and strap choices

The 46 mm model measures 45.8 x 45.8 x 10.7 mm and weighs about 48 g without the strap. It suits wrists of 140 to 210 mm. The 41 mm model measures 41.3 x 41.3 x 9.5 mm, weighs about 35 g and fits wrists of 120 to 190 mm, with one gold version narrower at 130 to 190 mm. Both use a stainless steel front case and a rear case made from fibre-reinforced composite. Controls are a rotating crown that doubles as the home button, plus a side button. The strap range is wide: black fluoroelastomer, brown composite leather and a blue woven strap on the 46 mm, and black and blue fluoroelastomer, white composite leather, brown woven and a gold Milanese strap on the 41 mm. Huawei's EasyFit design lets you remove the strap by pressing down on it, which makes swapping simple.

Water resistance is rated 5 ATM under ISO 22810:2010, which Huawei says suits shallow-water activities such as pool swimming, and the watch also meets the IP69K rating under ISO 20653:2023, which covers high-temperature, high-pressure spray. Huawei advises against wearing it in hot showers, saunas or while diving, and says that composite leather, woven, titanium and ceramic straps are not intended for swimming or heavy sweat. The operating temperature range is -20 to +45 degrees Celsius.

Display and software

The 46 mm watch has a 1.43-inch AMOLED screen and the 41 mm has a 1.32-inch one; both are 466 x 466 pixels, which gives 326 pixels per inch and 352 pixels per inch respectively. Huawei adds 11 new watch face themes at launch, an optimised interface with colour-coded apps, and a keyboard (the Celia keyboard) for typing replies as well as voice input. Bluetooth calls work through a built-in speaker and microphone. Extra apps can be installed from the watch's AppGallery. The watch pairs with Android 9.0 and later or iOS 13.0 and later through the Huawei Health app, and Huawei describes the system as working on both phone platforms.

Training and navigation

For sports, Huawei lists more than 100 workout modes and a set of running tools: real-time map-based routes, running form analysis that tracks ground contact balance and vertical oscillation, and a RouteDraw function for creative routes. Cycling is supported by turning the watch and phone into a bike computer, with the option to pair a power meter. The Stay Fit app logs calorie intake against the deficit. For positioning, the watch supports dual-band GNSS on L1 and L5 with GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS, boosted by Huawei's Sunflower positioning system. Huawei says the GT 5 series' 46 mm editions received an excellent rating for positioning performance from the TL Certification Center. This is a manufacturer claim about a third-party certificate and the exact test conditions are not given here.

Health tracking

The TruSense system is Huawei's name for its optical sensor design and algorithms. Huawei says it monitors six body systems, including respiratory, nervous and movement, and that it received an SGS Switzerland certification for dynamic heart-rate accuracy based on data at the time of the September 2024 launch. The sensor list is an optical heart rate sensor, temperature sensor, barometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and ambient light sensor. Software features include an emotional wellbeing app that shows a mood from TruSense data, women's cycle tracking and sleep monitoring that can flag abnormal breathing during sleep. Some of these features are limited to certain countries. Huawei also offered a three-month Huawei Health+ membership with purchase, subject to terms. These are wellness features based on manufacturer claims, not medical diagnoses.

Battery and charging

Huawei publishes three figures per size, all from its own laboratory tests. On the 46 mm watch: up to 14 days with maximum-use settings, up to 9 days with typical use and up to 5 days with the always-on display on. On the 41 mm watch: up to 7 days, up to 5 days and up to 3 days respectively. The test assumptions include 200 screen wake-ups per day for the maximum figure, 30 minutes of Bluetooth calling per week and heart-rate monitoring always on, so heavy GPS use or frequent calls will shorten those numbers. Charging is wireless with a charging cradle that is supplied in the box together with the cable. The charger input is 5V to 9V at up to 2A.

Who it is for

The GT 5 suits people who want a stylish round watch that lasts more than a week, who run or cycle recreationally and like to see routes and form data without carrying a more rugged outdoor watch. The 41 mm version is a good choice for smaller wrists. Runners and hikers who need serious mapping may prefer a dedicated sports watch such as the Garmin Forerunner 970. You can see how it ranks overall on the rankings page.
