Amazfit Active 2 Square with black leather strap, additional red silicone strap, magnetic charging base (no USB-C cable), instruction manual

The Amazfit Active 2 Square takes the features of the round Amazfit Active 2 and puts them in a rectangular case. Amazfit announced the square version on 17 June 2025 and made it available the same day through its own store and Amazon at $149.99 (€149.90 in Europe). The company describes it as having the same feature set as the round model, with the shape as the only real change. That is the useful way to read this watch: it is a design choice rather than a new generation. This review is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, and looks at what you get for the money and where a square case helps or hurts.

Where it fits in the lineup

Amazfit's Active line is the mainstream fitness watch family, sitting below the rugged T-Rex and the premium Balance models. The Active 2 Square is the fashion-forward member: stainless-steel bezel, sapphire glass and a leather strap in the box, at a price well below the premium tier. Nearby in the family is the Amazfit Active Max, which lists a 1.5-inch display with up to 3,000 nits, a much larger battery rated at up to 25 days of typical use and a $169 price. The Square's pitch is different: a classic wristwatch silhouette with sports tracking behind it. If you prefer a round face, the standard Active 2 offers the same features, according to Amazfit.

Design and display

The screen is a 1.75-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 390 x 450 pixels, roughly 341 ppi, covered in sapphire glass. Amazfit quotes a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, which is generous for a watch at this price and should keep the display readable in strong sunlight. The case is a polymer body with a polished stainless-steel bezel, and it measures 43.32 x 36.9 x 9 mm. Without the strap the watch weighs 31.4 g. Two buttons sit on the side, and the watch has a built-in microphone and speaker. Water resistance is 5 ATM, so swimming laps in a pool is fine but diving is not.

In the box you get a black leather strap with a classic pin buckle (20 mm, for wrists between 150 and 210 mm) and an extra red silicone sport strap (135 to 195 mm). Including a sports strap is a practical touch, because leather and sweat are not good companions. The square shape gives a larger reading area than a round dial of the same width, which suits notifications, text-heavy menus and map views. The trade-off is that a square watch can catch on sleeves more easily and looks less sporty to some eyes.

Sensors, health and fitness tracking

The Active 2 Square uses Amazfit's BioTracker 6.0 PPG sensor, with five photodiodes and dual LEDs, together with an accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, geomagnetic sensor, temperature sensor and a barometric altimeter. Amazfit says the PulsePrecision algorithm improves heart-rate accuracy to the level of the T-Rex 3, and that the RestoreIQ algorithm does the same for sleep monitoring. These are manufacturer claims and have not been independently verified here. In daily use the watch tracks heart rate, blood-oxygen saturation, stress and skin temperature around the clock, and records sleep stages (including REM), naps and sleep breathing quality, plus a sleep score.

A Readiness score summarises mental and physical recovery, and a heart-rate-variability feature adds recovery data. Amazfit's PAI system rewards heart-rate activity over time, and menstrual-cycle tracking is included; the Wild.AI mini app adds cycle-based wellness insights. As with every wearable in this class, the health readings are for information, and Amazfit states that the watch and the Zepp App are not medical devices.

Sports, navigation and smart features

Amazfit lists more than 160 sports modes, including the official HYROX race mode. A smart strength-training mode recognises 25 strength movements and counts reps, sets and rest time; the specification page adds 8 recognised sports movements. The addition of a barometer compared with the first Active enables altitude readings and winter sports such as skiing. Running support includes a track-run mode, smart trajectory correction and a virtual pacer, while the watch can connect to heart-rate belts and running or cycling power, speed and cadence sensors. Zepp Coach adds personalised plans from 3K runs to marathons.

Navigation is a notable strength for the price. The watch supports five satellite systems and imports offline maps and route files with turn-by-turn directions, which can be followed on screen or announced through the speaker or connected Bluetooth headphones. Continuous GPS use is rated at up to 21 hours. On the smart side, there is Bluetooth music control, call, SMS and app notifications, quick replies on Android, alarms, weather, a voice memo recorder and the Zepp Flow voice assistant in selected countries and regions. There is no mention of contactless payments on the specification page, so do not buy it expecting a wallet replacement.

Battery and charging

The rated battery capacity is 260 mAh. Amazfit gives up to 10 days of typical use, up to 19 days in battery-saver mode, up to 5 days of heavy use and up to 21 hours of continuous GPS. Typical use is a manufacturer lab scenario that assumes always-on heart-rate monitoring and a few workouts per week, so expect less with the display set to always-on and with frequent GPS sessions. A full charge takes about two hours in theory using the magnetic charging base. Note that the base comes without a USB-C cable.

Who should buy it

This watch suits people who want a watch that looks at home at the office and still records a spin class, a trail run or a HYROX session. It is also a good entry point for first-time sports-watch buyers who want offline maps and detailed sleep data without paying for a separate service. The watch works with the Zepp App and connects to Android 7.0 and above and iOS 15.0 and above.

If you plan to run long distances in tough conditions, the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro is better armoured. If battery life matters more than the case shape, compare it directly in our Active 2 Square versus Active Max page, or check the rankings for how the whole category stacks up.

Compromises

Bottom line

The Active 2 Square is a well-equipped, good-looking fitness watch with a bright sapphire display, a wide choice of sports modes and offline navigation for $149.99. It does not pretend to be a rugged outdoor tool or a premium smartwatch, and judged on the numbers Amazfit publishes it delivers a lot for the price. The main question is simply whether you like square watches.
