The Microsoft Surface Pro, 13-inch (12th Edition) is the larger of Microsoft's two current Surface Pro sizes and the one aimed at people who want a tablet that can truly replace a laptop. It keeps the familiar formula of a kickstand, a detachable keyboard and an optional pen, and swaps in the new Snapdragon X2 processors, a 3:2 PixelSense display up to 120Hz that comes as LCD or OLED, a removable solid-state drive and up to 64GB of memory. This page reviews what Microsoft has published about the device, how it relates to the smaller 12-inch model, and which compromises matter. It is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, not on our own benchmarks, so battery and performance numbers are Microsoft's claims. Microsoft's page names the release as the 12th Edition; we use June 2026 as the launch period, but we could not confirm a precise on-sale date on the official pages.

Where it sits in the Surface lineup

Microsoft sells the Surface Pro in two sizes. The 12-inch model, officially the 2nd Edition, starts at $1,149.99, uses a 12-inch 2196 x 1464 LCD at 90Hz, a six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus and weighs about 686 g. The 13-inch 12th Edition costs more, starting at $1,499.99, and offers a larger 2880 x 1920 screen at 120Hz with a choice of LCD or OLED, a 10-core X2 Plus or a 12-core X2 Elite chip, USB4 ports and a Surface Connect port. The two sizes are covered on separate pages, and the Surface Pro 12-inch 2nd Edition page is the place to read about the smaller one. A side-by-side view is available in the Surface Pro 13-inch vs 12-inch comparison.

Because it runs Windows, this device competes with laptops as much as with tablets. Apple's iPad Pro M5 is the obvious tablet rival, but it runs a different operating system, so the choice is as much about software as hardware; see Surface Pro 13-inch vs iPad Pro M5.

Design

Microsoft describes a precision-crafted aluminum body. The enclosure, including the bucket, kickstand and pen tray, is made with recycled aluminum alloy, which Microsoft says it validated with an independent laboratory. The weight is 1.97 lb (895 g) without a keyboard, which Microsoft notes may vary with manufacturing. The kickstand opens to a wide angle, and Microsoft's Surface Pro page quotes a 165-degree range for it, so the device can sit flat for drawing or upright for typing. In the pictures on Microsoft's pages the device appears in Platinum, Black and Dune; Microsoft notes that colours, sizes and finishes vary by store, market and configuration, so check what is on offer locally.

The ports are two USB-C ports that support USB4, a Surface Connect port and a keyboard port for the Surface Pro 13-inch keyboards. Networking is Wi-Fi 7, and Microsoft notes that the 6GHz band is not available in all regions. A rare feature for a tablet is the removable Gen 4 SSD. Microsoft says drives can be replaced for out-of-warranty repair, and it offers a drive-retention benefit for business buyers. A 39W power supply with Surface Connect is included in the box.

Display and pen

The 13-inch PixelSense touchscreen is listed at 2880 x 1920 pixels in a 3:2 ratio with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support. It is available as an OLED or an LCD depending on the processor choice: the X2 Plus configuration comes with an LCD display, while the X2 Elite configuration comes with an OLED. Microsoft states that the screen has rounded corners within a standard rectangle, so the 13-inch figure is measured as a rectangle and the viewable area is slightly smaller. HDR content requires HDR settings to be enabled.

The optional Surface Slim Pen, sold separately, supports sketching and note-taking with 4,096 points of pressure, and Microsoft describes a new Ink Canvas app that turns sketches into diagrams and images. The keyboard family includes the 13-inch Keyboard, a model with built-in pen storage and charging, and a Flex Keyboard that can be detached and used wirelessly, with a haptic touchpad. Keyboard and pen are sold separately, which adds to the real cost of ownership.

Performance and software

The processors are the Snapdragon X2 Plus with 10 cores or the Snapdragon X2 Elite with 12 cores, both paired with a Qualcomm Hexagon neural processing unit rated at 80 TOPS and an Adreno GPU. Memory is LPDDR5x with configurations of 16GB, 24GB, 32GB and 64GB in the store listings, and storage runs to 1TB. Microsoft's store lists price steps: the base 16GB/256GB with X2 Plus is $1,499.99, while the X2 Elite with OLED starts at $1,799.99, and the 64GB/1TB configuration reaches $3,549.99. Those are US list prices at the time of checking and can change. We do not have independent benchmark results, so we do not quote any.

The device ships with Windows 11 Home, with Windows 11 Pro offered for business purchases. Because these are Arm-based chips, app compatibility is worth checking for specialist software, although Microsoft promotes that all the apps most people need are available. Copilot+ PC features require configurations with at least 16GB of RAM, a condition every listed configuration meets, and several of them, such as improved search by description, work only with certain formats and languages. Windows Hello facial recognition is built in.

Cameras

There is a 1440p ultrawide front camera and a 10MP rear camera. Microsoft claims the 13-inch Surface Pro has the number two laptop camera in a DXOMARK ranking, based on commissioned testing in April 2026; this applies only to the same hardware and settings and is a sponsored comparison, so treat it as a manufacturer claim. For video calls the front camera and the Voice Focus noise processing are the practical benefits; the rear camera is more for documents and occasional photos than for photography.

Battery

Microsoft quotes up to 15.5 hours of local video playback and up to 11.5 hours of active web use for the 13-inch model, noting that the figures come from its own tests in May 2026 on preproduction software and 16GB configurations with brightness at 150 nits. Real-world endurance depends on brightness, workload and the display type, since an OLED panel may use more power than an LCD. No capacity in watt-hours is published on the pages we checked, so we do not state one. Charging uses the included 39W power supply with Surface Connect.

Who it is for

This Surface Pro suits professionals and students who want one device that works as a laptop at a desk and as a tablet on the move, especially in a Windows and Microsoft 365 environment. The larger screen, USB4 and the removable SSD make it more flexible than the 12-inch version, and the OLED option appeals to people who watch or edit media. It also suits anyone who needs a pen for notes but also needs real desktop software.
