Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen sold separately; pen stores and charges magnetically on the back

The Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch is the smallest and cheapest Surface Pro that Microsoft has sold, and this page covers the first edition of it, announced in May 2025. It is a detachable Windows tablet with a kickstand, a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus processor and a 12-inch touchscreen, aimed at people who want a light Windows machine that lasts a long time away from a socket. Because Microsoft has since released newer versions with similar names, the first section explains which model is which. The rest of the article is based on the published specifications and the manufacturer's announcements.

Which Surface Pro 12-inch is this?

Microsoft announced the Surface Pro, 12-inch and the Surface Laptop, 13-inch on 6 May 2025, and the Pro went on sale in select markets on 20 May 2025 with a US starting price of $799 (the keyboard and the pen were sold separately). A business version followed from July 22, 2025. Microsoft's own store pages later labelled this device "Surface Pro, 12-inch (1st Edition)". The generation that replaced it uses the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip with six cores and is listed as the Surface Pro 12-inch, 2nd Edition. Microsoft's current product page for the line is named Surface Pro 12th Edition and covers a 12-inch and a 13-inch model at higher prices. The device described here is the original: Snapdragon X Plus with eight cores and a 45 TOPS neural engine, not the X2 chip.

Design and display

The tablet measures 274 x 190 x 7.8 mm and weighs 686 g without a keyboard, according to Microsoft's specification sheets. The casing is anodised aluminium, and Microsoft states that the enclosure contains 82.9 percent recycled material, with 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery cell. On the back, a kickstand opens to 165 degrees and the Surface Slim Pen can be stored on the back, where it charges magnetically. The pen and the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard are sold separately; Microsoft showed the keyboard in colours such as Slate, Ocean and Violet, and the tablet itself in finishes including Platinum and Violet. The cameras are a 1080p front camera that also handles face login with Windows Hello and a 10MP rear camera.

The screen is a 12-inch PixelSense LCD with 2196 x 1464 pixels, a 3:2 shape, about 220 pixels per inch and a refresh rate that goes up to 90Hz, with 60Hz as the default. Microsoft's business specification sheet lists a typical maximum brightness of 400 nits, a 1200:1 contrast ratio, individually calibrated colour and a strengthened-glass, anti-reflective surface; the figures for the consumer version were not listed separately in the pages we could consult. The newer 2nd Edition is quoted at 500 nits, so brightness is one of the clearest differences between the two. The panel is an LCD, not OLED, so blacks are less deep than on an OLED tablet, but the 3:2 ratio suits documents and web pages well.

Performance and software

The processor is the Snapdragon X Plus with eight cores (model X1P-42-100) and a Qualcomm Hexagon neural processor rated at 45 TOPS, which meets the requirement for Microsoft's Copilot+ PC category. Consumer configurations are listed with 16GB of LPDDR5x memory and 256GB or 512GB of UFS storage, while the business sheet adds 24GB and 1TB options. The device runs Windows 11 and, being Copilot+ capable, supports features such as Recall (a preview at launch), Click to Do and improved Windows search. Because the chip uses the Arm architecture, most modern apps run natively or through Microsoft's emulation layer, but some older software, certain games and drivers for niche hardware may not work as well as on an Intel or AMD tablet. Anyone who relies on a specific professional program should check compatibility before buying.

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, plus two USB-C ports. Microsoft's business sheet describes them as USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 ports that support charging, data and DisplayPort 1.4a output for up to two 4K monitors at 60Hz; the consumer specifications we consulted for the newer model list USB 3.2, so it is worth confirming the port type on the exact configuration you buy. Fast charging requires a charger of at least 45W, and in some markets the charger is not in the box.

Camera and audio

Because this is a tablet used mostly for work, the front camera matters most: a 1080p camera with Windows Studio Effects, which includes automatic framing, portrait blur, eye contact and portrait light. The 10MP rear camera is meant for quick document or whiteboard photos, not as a serious photographic tool. Audio comes from 2W stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support and two studio microphones with voice focus, and Bluetooth LE Audio is supported. For video calls, the combination is more than adequate; for music and films, a small tablet speaker will always be limited compared with headphones.

Battery life

Microsoft's tests, conducted in March 2025 on pre-production units with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage, give up to 16 hours of local video playback and up to 12 hours of active web use, with brightness set to 150 nits. The battery has a nominal capacity of 38 Wh. The newer 2nd Edition is quoted with up to 15.5 hours of video and 13 hours of web use, a slightly different balance. These are manufacturer figures, obtained under controlled conditions, so real-world time depends on brightness, the apps in use and background activity.

Who it is for

The first-edition Surface Pro 12-inch suits students, travellers and office workers who want a Windows tablet for notes, documents, video calls and light creative work, and who value weight and battery life above peak speed. Pen users will like the magnetic pen storage and wireless charging. If you mainly want a tablet for media and apps, compare it with the iPad Air M3, and the page Surface Pro 12-inch vs iPad Air M3 lines up their specifications side by side. Android fans can also look at the Galaxy Tab S9 for a different software approach.

Compromises

The price of $799 does not include the keyboard or the pen, so the true cost of a laptop-style setup is higher. The processor is a mid-range part rather than a top-tier one, and it is a generation behind the X2 Plus in the 2nd Edition, which has a stronger neural engine and a brighter display. Windows on Arm still has some compatibility gaps. There is no OLED screen, and the specifications we consulted do not list an HDR rating. The port type and brightness vary between sources, so double-check the exact configuration. The basic proposition, though, is clear: a thin, light Windows tablet with a long battery life and a good pen experience. To see how it fits among other tablets, visit the rankings.
