The OnePlus Watch 2R takes the idea of the OnePlus Watch 2, a Wear OS smartwatch that tries to last for days by pairing two processors, and moves it into a lighter aluminium body at a lower position in the range. It has a 1.43-inch AMOLED screen, dual-frequency GPS, NFC payments through Google Wallet and a 500 mAh battery for which the company claims up to 100 hours in its Smart Mode. This overview is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information; the battery and health figures are the company's own claims and have not been verified independently.
Where the watch fits
OnePlus announced the Watch 2R on 16 July 2024 at its Summer Launch Event in Milan, alongside the Nord 4 phone, the Pad 2 tablet and the Nord Buds 3 Pro. The company positions it as sharing the main features of the OnePlus Watch 2 (battery life, chip design, GPS precision and sports tracking) in a form it calls lighter, and says the aluminium construction makes it almost 25% lighter than the Watch 2. The later OnePlus Watch 3 is the generation that followed. The page OnePlus Watch 2R vs OnePlus Watch 2 places the two side by side. The pages used for this summary do not state a US price, so none is given here.
Design and display
The case is made of an aluminium alloy, with a plastic bottom, and the watch comes with a silicone strap closed by a stainless-steel buckle. The dimensions are 47.6 x 46.6 x 12.1 mm (13.65 mm including the heart-rate sensor bump) and the weight is about 37 g without the strap and 59 g with it. The strap fits wrists between 140 and 210 mm. There are two colours: Forest Green, a new green for the series, and Gunmetal Gray in a more classic dark finish. The company describes the look as modern with a vintage flair, in the manner of a classic wristwatch. Protection is stated as 5ATM and IP68, so the watch is designed for swimming in a pool as well as for rain and splashes, with the usual caveat that the ratings come from lab tests and do not cover every situation.
The display is a 1.43-inch AMOLED with a 466 x 466 resolution (326 ppi), protected by a 2D glass cover. OnePlus lists a default maximum brightness of 600 nits and 1,000 nits in a high-brightness mode, and the screen supports an always-on mode. The cover is plain 2D glass, so buyers who expect sapphire should note the difference.
Dual-engine design and software
The most distinctive hardware feature is the "Dual-Engine Architecture". According to OnePlus, a Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 handles the demanding work, such as running Wear OS and third-party apps, while a second chip, the BES2700BP microcontroller, runs a lightweight real-time operating system (RTOS) for lower-power basics. The idea is to keep the power-hungry chip idle for as much of the day as possible. The memory is 2 GB of RAM plus 32 GB of storage for Wear OS, and an additional 4 GB of eMMC storage for the RTOS side.
There is a catch that the spec page itself spells out. The dual-engine behaviour is tied to the 100 native watch faces supplied by OnePlus. When you use a third-party watch face, the dual-engine mode is switched off and the watch runs on the Snapdragon W5 alone, which affects battery life. The Watch 2R runs Wear OS 4, so it supports third-party apps from Google Play and Google's own apps: Assistant, Maps, Calendar, Phone, Messages and Gmail. Google Wallet payment works through NFC in the supported countries.
Compatibility is limited to Android: the page says Android 8.0 or later with Google Mobile Services version 23.45.23 or newer. iPhones and Android Go devices are not supported. OnePlus phone owners get a few extra features, such as syncing alarms and weather data, and the watch is natural to pair with a phone like the OnePlus 12.
Battery life and charging
The battery is rated at 500 mAh. OnePlus lists three scenarios. In Smart Mode the claim is up to 100 hours when an official watch face is used, always-on display is off and usage follows a defined daily model with Bluetooth connection, sleep monitoring, a limited number of notifications, 20 minutes of app use and 30 minutes of GPS running. Under heavier use in Smart Mode, with always-on display, more notifications, navigation and music, the figure drops to up to 48 hours. In Power Saver Mode the claim is up to 12 days. These are results from the company's test model, so real life will vary with brightness, notifications and workouts.
Charging uses the supplied charging base and USB-C cable. OnePlus quotes 60 minutes for a full charge, and says that 10 minutes of charging provides roughly 24 hours of power in its test. Compared with many Wear OS watches that need a daily charge, the claimed endurance is the main reason to consider this model.
Health and fitness features
Sensors include an accelerometer, a gyroscope, an optical heart-rate sensor, a pulse oximeter, a geomagnetic sensor, a light sensor and a barometer. The watch offers heart-rate monitoring with high and low warnings, all-day blood oxygen monitoring, stress monitoring and sleep tracking with stages, a sleep score, breathing rate and a snoring-risk assessment. The OHealth app is the companion, syncs with Google Health Connect and, with a recent app version, with Strava.
For sport there are more than 100 modes and automatic recognition for six activities: running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing machine and elliptical machine. Running metrics include cadence, stride length, ground contact time and running power, and there are dedicated modes for tennis, badminton, skiing, jump rope, pool swimming and hiking. The dual-frequency GNSS receiver (L1 and L5) supports the Beidou, GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and QZSS systems, which the company markets as a precision feature. Bluetooth calling is supported in both Smart Mode and Power Saver Mode.
Who it suits
The Watch 2R is a reasonable choice for Android users who want a Wear OS watch with real app support, GPS running data and better battery life than most of the category, and who do not need a premium case or an LTE connection. It will appeal to runners and gym users who dislike charging every night, as well as people who want a lighter watch for sleep tracking. Someone who wants a larger set of cellular features or a more premium finish should look at a more expensive model.
Limitations
- Android only: no iPhone support, and Android Go devices are excluded.
- Battery claims depend on settings: the headline 100 hours needs an official watch face and a defined usage pattern.
- Third-party watch faces: they switch off the dual-engine mode.
- Materials: flat 2D glass and a plastic bottom case.
- No cellular option: the specification lists Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS, with no LTE.
