The Samsung Galaxy Watch FE is a 40mm aluminium smartwatch that Samsung announced on 13 June 2024 as a new addition to its Galaxy Watch family, aimed at extending Samsung's health and wellness features to more users. The watch uses Samsung's BioActive Sensor for heart, sleep and body-composition tracking, a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED screen covered in sapphire crystal, the Exynos W920 processor and a 247 mAh battery. This page is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information. Samsung says availability varies by market, and the announcement said the watch would be available globally "this summer", so check local sale dates and prices yourself.
Where it sits in the Galaxy Watch lineup
Samsung's smartwatches fall into a few groups: the standard Galaxy Watch models, the rugged Ultra line, and the FE. The FE is not a stripped-down fitness band. Samsung says it brings the hardware performance and the health and fitness monitoring features of the Galaxy Watch series to more users, with a design based on the round-case look of the family, while keeping the hardware simple: one size and an aluminium case. For the models that came afterwards, the Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch9 pages show how the family moved on.
We do not state a US price because the official announcement we used does not give one. Samsung only said that availability may vary by market and that pricing, design, components and specifications are subject to change without notice. The same footnote applies to the 13 June 2024 date, which is the announcement date and not necessarily the date the watch reached shelves in your country.
Design and display
The Galaxy Watch FE comes in a single 40mm size, with an aluminium case measuring 39.3 x 40.4 x 9.8 mm (without the health sensors) and weighing 26.6 g without the band. That is light, and the compact size suits smaller wrists and overnight wear for sleep tracking. Samsung offers three colours: Black, Pink Gold and Silver. The bands that Samsung shows have blue and orange stitching details, and a one-click band system lets you swap straps. Samsung notes that the bands are sold separately and that band availability varies by market, so look at the exact bundle in your region.
The display is a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED panel at 396 x 396 pixels with a full-colour Always On Display option. The glass is sapphire crystal, which Samsung highlights for scratch resistance in daily use. As with all small AMOLED screens, brightness and outdoor readability depend on the watch face you choose, and Samsung does not publish a peak-brightness figure in the announcement.
Performance and software
Inside is the Exynos W920, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.18GHz, with 1.5GB of memory and 16GB of storage. These are modest numbers, which suits the FE's role: notifications, workout tracking, payments and music control rather than heavy app multitasking. The software is Wear OS Powered by Samsung, with One UI 5 Watch listed at launch. Compatibility requires an Android phone running Android 11.0 or higher with more than 1.5GB of memory; Samsung's wording makes clear that the deepest integration is with Galaxy phones, and several features require a paired Samsung device or a Samsung account. It is not a watch for iPhone owners.
Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n at 2.4 and 5GHz), NFC for Samsung Wallet payments and multi-constellation GPS (GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo). An LTE version is mentioned, but Samsung says LTE connectivity is available only on LTE models and may depend on market and carrier.
Health and fitness features
The BioActive Sensor combines optical heart-rate measurement, an electrical heart sensor and bioelectrical impedance analysis. Samsung says this lets the watch provide advanced sleep features, from sleep-pattern monitoring to sleep coaching, plus heart-health features such as HR Alert for unusually high or low heart rates and the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification, which monitors for rhythms suggestive of atrial fibrillation. Blood pressure and ECG measurements are also listed. Several of these features come with important conditions that Samsung spells out: some are available only in selected markets, blood pressure needs calibration against a traditional cuff every four weeks, sleep coaching needs at least seven days of data, and body composition should not be used by people with implanted pacemakers or other implanted medical devices or during pregnancy. Samsung stresses that the features are intended for general wellness and fitness and not for diagnosing, treating or managing medical conditions.
Body Composition and motivational messages are meant to help users track progress, and workout heart-rate zones can be tuned to your cardiopulmonary capability after a 10-minute outdoor run at a steady 4 km/h or faster. As with any wrist-worn sensor, treat the readings as indicators and consult a professional for medical questions.
Smart features
The FE offers the usual Galaxy ecosystem tools: Find My Phone for locating a disconnected handset, Camera Controller for remotely changing modes and zoom on a paired Galaxy phone, and Samsung Wallet for payments and for storing digital IDs where supported. Samsung adds new watch faces for personalisation. These conveniences make the watch more useful, but they are tied to Samsung accounts and compatible phones, so you should check the support list for your handset.
Battery and charging
The battery is rated at 247 mAh (typical), with WPC-based wireless charging. Samsung's announcement and press specification sheet we used do not state a battery-life figure in hours or days, and note that actual battery life varies with network conditions and usage, so we do not quote one. The small capacity is consistent with the 40mm case, and as a rule an always-on display, LTE use and continuous heart-rate tracking will shorten the time between charges. If battery life is your top concern, check Samsung's current regional page before buying.
Durability
The watch carries a 5ATM rating and IP68 protection, and Samsung states MIL-STD-810H compliance. Samsung defines the 5ATM rating as water resistance to 50 metres for 10 minutes and says the watch is not suitable for diving or high-pressure water activities; the IP68 rating covers dust and fresh water to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. That is enough for swimming in a pool and everyday wear, but not for scuba or water sports with strong jets.
Who it is for, and the compromises
The Galaxy Watch FE is a good fit for Android users, especially Galaxy phone owners, who want a well-rounded health-focused smartwatch with sapphire glass and a recognisable design and who do not need the rugged Ultra hardware. It also works as a first smartwatch. The trade-offs are visible in the specifications: a single 40mm size, a 247 mAh battery, no stated battery-life figure, 1.5GB of RAM, and dependence on a Samsung phone for full features. Our comparison with the Galaxy Watch8 shows what the newer line adds, the comparison with the Galaxy Watch Ultra contrasts it with Samsung's rugged top model, and the rankings page places it among the other smartwatches we cover.
In short, the Galaxy Watch FE is a sensible entry point to Samsung's smartwatch world. Confirm the sale date, the LTE option, the price and the compatibility with your phone in your own market before you buy.
