The Tecno Camon 40 Premier 5G is the top model of Tecno's Camon 40 family, and it is built around a single idea: take a camera-first upper-mid-range phone and give it hardware that is usually kept for pricier devices. The page for it lists a 6.67-inch 1.5K AMOLED display at 144Hz, a MediaTek Dimensity 8350 Ultimate processor, three 50-megapixel rear cameras including a 3X lens, a 50-megapixel autofocus selfie camera, a 5,100 mAh battery with 70W charging and IP68/IP69 dust and water ratings. This overview is based on Tecno's published specification and product pages and does not claim hands-on testing. Where a number comes from Tecno's own laboratory it is described as a manufacturer claim.
Where it sits in the Camon 40 range
Tecno's Camon 40 page lists four related models: the Camon 40, the Camon 40 Pro, the Camon 40 Pro 5G and this Camon 40 Premier 5G. The Premier is the one this page presents as the flagship of the family, with the Dimensity 8350 Ultimate processor and a 1.5K 144Hz screen. If you want to see the more affordable siblings, the Tecno Camon 40 and Tecno Camon 40 Pro have their own pages, and the budget Spark line is represented by the Tecno Spark 40. The pages we could read give no single global launch date and no US price, so the release date used on this site is an approximation and no price is quoted. Tecno sells phones through regional channels, and the Camon 40 Premier availability, memory and colours may differ by country.
Design and display
The signature feature is what Tecno calls the "Space Ring": a large circular camera island on the back, in a side-axis design that sets the camera off-centre alongside a contrasting metal-toned strip along the frame. Two colours are listed on the specification page, Galaxy Black and Emerald Lake Green. In the manufacturer's images the black version has a matte grey finish with a bright metallic side band and an orange accent ring on the camera, while the green one pairs a teal back with a silver frame. The dimensions are given as 161 x 75 x 7.7 mm. No weight is stated on the pages we could read.
The screen is a 6.67-inch AMOLED with a resolution of 1260 x 2800 pixels, which Tecno calls 1.5K, and a refresh rate of 144Hz. It has a "Golden Ratio" proportion and a 94 percent screen-to-body ratio, with narrow side bezels. Tecno describes it as ultra-bright but does not publish a nit figure on the pages we read, so peak brightness is something to check in independent measurements. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, which Tecno says survived a 1.5 metre drop onto asphalt in its test and offers twice the scratch resistance, a claim for which no baseline is given. The company also lists an SGS five-star drop-resistance certification. A One-Tap button on the side opens quick functions: a double press starts the FlashSnap camera mode, and a long press wakes Tecno's Ella assistant.
Performance, cooling and software
The chipset is the MediaTek Dimensity 8350 Ultimate, a 4nm processor that sits in the upper end of the mid-range. Tecno says it delivers a 20 percent increase in CPU performance and a 60 percent increase in GPU performance with reduced power consumption, compared with its previous generation; the exact comparison is not given, so treat it as a claim. The memory is listed as 256GB of storage with 24GB of RAM, but the footnote shows that this is 12GB of physical RAM plus 12GB of extended RAM, which is storage space used as virtual memory. The physical figure to compare is therefore 12GB.
To keep that power under control, Tecno describes a 12-layer cooling stack with a vapour chamber of more than 5,000 square millimetres and a graphite layer rated at 1,800 W of thermal conductivity, along with temperature control during gaming and charging. Other claims include an adaptive "waist" antenna that Tecno says boosts Wi-Fi signal by 30 percent in landscape mode, online gaming latency as low as 20 ms, and PinPoint Nav 2.0 for more precise positioning. A TÜV SÜD certificate for a "72-month lag-free" experience is also quoted. These are manufacturer statements, not independent results. The software is Android 15 with Tecno's HiOS skin, and it adds AI tools under the Ella name: call translation and summaries, AI call noise cancellation, an object eraser, image extension, writing assistance and Circle to Search from Google.
Connectivity listed on the specification page includes 2G to 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM radio, GPS, NFC, USB Type-C with OTG and an infrared remote control. Audio comes from dual speakers with Dolby Atmos. The listing names no wireless charging.
Camera
This is the part Tecno puts forward most strongly. The rear set has three 50-megapixel cameras. The main is a 1/1.56-inch sensor, which Tecno's overview identifies as a Sony LYT-701, with 1.0 micron fused pixels and optical image stabilization. The second is a 50-megapixel 3X camera. The third is a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens with a 119.4-degree, 14 mm equivalent view and AI distortion correction for group shots. Tecno's PolarAce 2.0 imaging system uses an independent image processor and promises 4K video at 30 frames per second in low light, with a choice of 10-bit 3D LUT styles. A flicker sensor and a dual flash complete the setup.
For portraits, the phone offers a multi-focal range at 24, 35, 50, 70 and 85 mm, with AI-adaptive background blur. The front camera is a 50-megapixel unit with autofocus and eye tracking and a 91.6-degree field of view for group selfies. FlashSnap takes the best frame from an in-camera buffer of 30 frames per second, and an AutoSnap mode captures a shot automatically when the scene looks right. Tecno adds that the phone can take photos underwater, though it warns that the device is not a professional waterproof phone and that the protection can decline with wear. Sensor sizes and features are encouraging, but without independent samples it is hard to say how the processing compares with the best competitors.
Battery and charging
The battery is 5,100 mAh with 70W charging. Tecno's own claim is 50 percent in 15 minutes and a full charge in 45 minutes, and it notes that the speed depends on the charger, the cable and temperature, with the numbers coming from its laboratory. The company also states that the battery keeps more than 80 percent of its capacity after 1,800 cycles, or roughly five years. For the size of the screen this is an average capacity, so the fast charging is the main appeal.
Who it is for, and the trade-offs
The Camon 40 Premier 5G is aimed at people who care about photography and a premium-feeling phone but do not want to pay flagship prices: social-media creators, travellers and anyone who wants a flexible camera and a fast, smooth screen. The IP68/IP69 ratings and Gorilla Glass 7i add reassurance for everyday use.
- Strengths: 144Hz 1.5K AMOLED, Dimensity 8350 Ultimate, three 50MP rear cameras with a 3X option, 50MP autofocus selfie camera, 70W charging, IP68/IP69.
- Compromises: a mid-sized 5,100 mAh battery, extended RAM that is virtual, no wireless charging listed, no published brightness or weight figures, and regional variation in software and availability.
