The TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G is built around one idea: a phone screen that is easier on the eyes. Its 6.8-inch 120Hz display uses TCL's NXTPAPER treatment, which adds an anti-glare finish and a set of software modes that imitate paper and e-book readers. Around that screen TCL has placed a 108MP main camera, a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chip, 512GB of storage and a 5010 mAh battery with 33W charging. This overview is based on the specifications and product information TCL publishes, and it marks claims that come from the company rather than from independent testing.
What NXTPAPER means here
TCL's page lists two industry awards for the phone, Best of IFA 2024 and a 2025 CES Innovation Award, and describes the screen as full-colour electronic paper. That wording deserves a sober reading, because TCL's spec sheet names no panel type and describes the glass in ordinary terms. The glass is listed as 2.5D with an anti-glare (AG) treatment, the resolution is 1080 x 2460 at 396 pixels per inch, typical brightness is 550 nits, and the colour gamut is 95 percent NTSC. Anti-glare finishes usually trade some sparkle and contrast for fewer reflections, so expect a calmer, slightly softer image than on a glossy panel.
The same technology reaches beyond phones. See the TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G for a newer phone with this display type and the NXTPAPER 11 Plus tablet for a larger take. A comparison with the TCL 60 SE shows how much this model differs from TCL's plain budget phone. TCL's page gives neither a release date nor a price, so the date stored for this phone is a placeholder and no price is quoted.
The NXTPAPER key and reading modes
A dedicated NXTPAPER key sits on the side, and it is the clearest sign of what the phone is for. Pressing it switches on Max Ink Mode, which TCL describes as an e-book-like state that mutes distractions. The key can also be set to two other interface modes: Ink Paper Mode for long text and Color Paper Mode for comics and graphic content. In Max Ink Mode TCL says running apps may be closed, with notifications allowed only from calls, messages, the clock, the calendar and apps you choose.
The company quotes up to seven days of immersive reading, calculated from at least four hours per day, and up to 26 days of standby. The sheet attaches the 26-day figure to Max Ink Mode in one place and to standby on the product page in another, so read it as a laboratory estimate rather than a guarantee. A pre-installed library from third-party content providers is mentioned, with availability varying. Eye-care extras include ambient light detection, a night light mode and reminders that tell you when the light is too dark or too bright or when you are lying down while using the screen.
Design and materials
The phone measures 167.6 x 75.5 x 7.99 mm and weighs 196 g. TCL offers five colours, namely Moon Gray, Midnight Blue, Alps White, Pale Gold and Rosy Purple, although it notes that not all are sold everywhere. Moon Gray and Alps White use a basalt-fibre back cover, and the other three use glass fibre. In the images, the back has a textured, slightly stone-like finish and a large round camera housing. The side carries three keys: NXTPAPER, volume and a combined fingerprint reader and power button. A 3.5 mm headphone jack is listed, along with NFC and Bluetooth 5.3.
Performance and memory
The Dimensity 6300 is an eight-core 5G chip with two Cortex-A76 and six Cortex-A55 cores and an Arm G57 MC2 graphics unit. It is an efficient mid-range design suited to social apps, streaming, reading and moderate gaming. The product page calls the performance uncompromised, which is stronger than a chip of this class justifies, so keep expectations realistic.
Memory is 8GB of real RAM plus 8GB of RAM expansion, which TCL markets as 16GB. The expansion borrows storage space, so it is a convenience for background apps and does not equal physical memory. Storage is 512GB, of which TCL lists 486GB as available to the user, and a microSD card of up to 2TB can be added separately. The 5G band lists differ by variant: the T803E model and the T803D model, which also supports eSIM and a barometer, use different frequency sets. Check which variant is sold in your market if you need a particular network band.
Software and AI
The phone launches with Android 14, and TCL says it can be upgraded up to Android 16, with security updates until March 2029. A footnote ties the upgrade and the support period to the T803D variant, so confirm the details for your model. The AI features, which TCL says are built on Microsoft technology, include text comprehension (select a passage and ask for an explanation), AI writing help and meeting transcripts with summaries. TCL notes that the launch timing of these features may vary by device version.
Camera
The main camera is 108MP, with a 1/1.67-inch sensor, 0.64 micrometre pixels, an f/1.75 aperture and phase-detection autofocus. It is accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide camera with a 120-degree view and a 2MP macro camera. The front camera is 32MP. Video is capped at 1080p at 30 frames per second, and the camera modes include night mode, bokeh, zoom, full HDR and face beautification. TCL also advertises a 360-degree horizon lock that keeps video level when the phone tilts.
TCL does not describe how the 108MP sensor bins its pixels, so judge the camera by sample photos rather than by the 108MP label. The 2MP macro lens is a supplementary tool, not a serious close-up camera.
Battery and charging
The 5010 mAh battery charges at up to 33W, and TCL says a full charge takes 1.7 hours. It also supports reverse charging for accessories. The daily-operation-use rating is 16 hours in TCL's lab. Real-life battery life will vary with how much you use the screen, and TCL's own reading figures assume Max Ink Mode.
Who it suits
This phone suits people who spend a lot of time reading, studying or scrolling and want a calmer screen, along with buyers who like a physical key to change display mode. It also fits those wanting a large storage pool and a 5G radio at mid-range specifications. Those who care more about raw speed or a gaming-grade screen should check the rankings, where brighter AMOLED phones rank higher.
Compromises
- Softer image. An anti-glare finish usually reduces punch compared with a glossy screen.
- Mid-range chip. The Dimensity 6300 is not built for demanding games.
- Virtual RAM. Half of the 16GB figure is borrowed storage.
- Variant differences. Network bands, SIM options and update details differ between T803E and T803D.
- 1080p30 video. Recording options are limited for a 108MP camera.
- Accessories sold separately. T-Pen and the flip case are optional.
The TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G is a specialist: a phone for people who value how the screen feels over how fast the chip is. For that audience, it delivers a coherent package, and the price it sells for in your market decides whether the bargain holds.
