The Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 is a compact 8.8-inch Android gaming tablet that Lenovo announced at CES on 7 January 2025, where it appears in the company's materials as the Legion Tab (8.8", 3). It pairs a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with a fast, small screen and a dedicated cooling system, and it is aimed at people who play demanding mobile games and want a device that is easier to hold than a standard tablet. This page is a spec-and-information-based review built from the published specifications and Lenovo's own statements, so performance statements are manufacturer claims unless noted otherwise.
Where it sits in the lineup
The Legion brand covers Lenovo's gaming hardware, from laptops and desktops to the Legion Go handhelds. The Legion Tab is the Android member of that family: a tablet that sits in the same visual language but runs Android games from Google Play rather than a PC library. The Gen 3 name refers to the third generation of the 8.8-inch Legion Tab, and Lenovo says its vapor chamber is 14 percent larger than in the previous generation. In its US announcement Lenovo gave an expected starting price of $499.99 with availability from January 2025, which put it in the price band of a mid-range flagship phone rather than a budget tablet.
A newer model, the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5, now has its own page, so the Gen 3 is best treated as the established, well-documented option in the line.
Design and display
The Gen 3 is built around its screen. It is an 8.8-inch PureSight touch display with a QHD+ resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 (Lenovo calls it 2.5K) and HDR10 support. Lenovo's press text quotes a refresh rate of up to 165Hz, with a footnote describing a range from 60Hz to 165Hz depending on app and device mode. The specification table that accompanies the announcement, however, lists 144Hz and marks the figure as subject to change in the final device. This page therefore quotes 165Hz as the headline claim; check the current regional listing for the exact number. The same table gives a touch sampling rate of 144Hz in games and 288Hz outside games.
The body is full metal, 7.79 mm thick, and weighs about 350 grams (plus or minus 10). Its dimensions are 208.54 x 129.46 mm, which is close to a large phone in width and easy to hold in two hands in landscape. The only listed colour is Eclipse Black. Lenovo's pictures show a dark, angular design with the Legion emblem on the back and a vertical camera block in the corner. Audio comes from a dual speaker system with two microphones. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, and there are two USB-C ports, which Lenovo ties to bypass charging so power can feed the system directly during long sessions.
Performance and software
The processor is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which Lenovo says supports hardware ray tracing and up to 165 frames per second in compatible games. Memory is 12GB of LPDDR5x with 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, a combination that gives games room to stay loaded and a large library to install. Lenovo's Legion Space app handles library management, and Game Assistant and Game Modes offer customisable settings that Lenovo says optimise the gaming experience.
The tablet ships with Android 14 under Lenovo's ZUI 16.1 interface. Lenovo's table says the device is expected to receive Android 15, Android 16 and Android 17, plus four years of security updates through 2029. Note that this is stated as an expectation, not a guarantee, and it is worth checking again at the time of purchase. If you want a second opinion on how a flagship-class chip behaves in a larger slate, the comparison page Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 vs Galaxy Tab S9 shows two quite different philosophies side by side.
In everyday terms, 12GB of memory is generous for a tablet of this size. It allows several heavy games and apps to stay resident, and the 256GB of fast UFS 4.0 storage shortens load times for large downloads. Lenovo lists no microSD slot in the material reviewed, so the 256GB is all the space there is, which matters for players who collect large titles. The Wi-Fi 7 certification is useful for cloud gaming and fast downloads, provided the router supports it as well.
Cooling and sustained play
Gaming tablets live or die on heat. Lenovo equips the Gen 3 with its Legion Coldfront vapor chamber, which it describes as 14 percent larger than before, to spread heat from the chip and keep frame rates steady in long sessions. Lenovo does not publish sustained-performance figures in the announcement, so how well the cooling works in practice cannot be judged from the published data alone. A larger vapor chamber, a full-metal back and a thin chassis are all sensible design choices, but independent stress tests are the right place to confirm the claim.
Camera
The cameras are deliberately modest. The rear camera is a 13MP unit, and the front camera is 8MP. Neither is positioned as a selling point, and no ultrawide or depth sensor is listed. They cover scanning, quick snapshots and video calls, which is about all a gaming tablet needs. Buyers who care about photography should look elsewhere in the tablet or phone range.
Battery and charging
The battery is 6,550mAh, and Lenovo lists a 45W USB-C charger. That is smaller than the 10,000mAh-plus cells in larger tablets, but the screen is also much smaller, so the capacity is in proportion to the size. Lenovo says the capacity, together with bypass charging, allows longer gaming and viewing sessions, though it publishes no hours of play. Heavy 3D games at high frame rates with a high-refresh display drain any battery quickly, so expect a few hours of intense play rather than a full day.
Who it is for
- Mobile gamers: The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a high-refresh QHD+ display and a cooling system make it a purpose-built option for demanding Android titles.
- Commuters and travellers: At about 350 grams and 7.79 mm thin it is easy to carry, and two USB-C ports make it flexible with controllers and accessories.
- Streamers and video fans: The sharp 8.8-inch panel with HDR10 suits video, though the dual speakers are not the main selling point.
- People who want a small tablet: Most tablets today are larger, so an 8.8-inch format with flagship hardware is unusual.
Compromises to know about
The price expectation of $499.99 buys a very specific tool. The screen is small for reading and multitasking, the speakers are only a dual setup, and the cameras are basic. The 6,550mAh battery will not match a large tablet in endurance. The 165Hz versus 144Hz discrepancy in Lenovo's own materials means you should verify the figure for your region. Finally, the update promise is phrased as expected rather than committed.
