The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE is the smaller of the two fan-edition tablets Samsung introduced in October 2023, and the one that most people will find easier to carry. It has a 10.9-inch screen, an S Pen in the box, an IP68 rating and the same Exynos 1380 processor as its larger sibling, in a body that weighs 523 g. Samsung positions the fan-edition tablets as a way to get the look and the pen experience of the Galaxy Tab S9 family at a lower price. This page is based on the published specifications and manufacturer information; it explains what you get, how this model differs from the Tab S9 FE+ and what you give up compared with the flagship.
Where it sits in the line-up
Two fan-edition tablets arrived together. The Tab S9 FE has the 10.9-inch display, 6GB of memory in the base version and an 8,000 mAh battery. The larger Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ has a 12.4-inch display and a battery of about 10,000 mAh. Above both sits the premium Galaxy Tab S9, which uses an AMOLED panel and a faster chip. The fan-edition idea continued with the Tab S10 FE generation, and the table at Galaxy Tab S9 FE vs Galaxy Tab S10 FE shows how the specifications changed. Because it is a 2023 design, it now makes most sense as a value purchase.
Design and durability
The Tab S9 FE has a full-metal frame, is 6.5 mm thick and measures 254.3 x 165.8 mm. At 523 g it is light enough for one-handed reading for short periods, although most people will rest it on a lap or table. The back is plain, carrying the Samsung wordmark, a "Sound by AKG" mark and a single rear camera in the top corner. Colours are Gray, Mint, Silver and Lavender, with availability depending on country, region or carrier, and the S Pen is offered in matching tones. The pen attaches magnetically to the back of the tablet.
Samsung rates both the tablet and its S Pen at IP68, based on laboratory tests for immersion in up to 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, and adds that it is not recommended for use at the beach or pool and that the protection is not permanent. The company also says that dust resistance was tested by a third party. For a tablet used by students and families, being rated against both dust and water is a practical benefit, and Samsung describes it as the first water- and dust-resistant Galaxy S FE tablet to come with an S Pen.
Display
The screen is a 10.9-inch TFT LCD with a resolution of 2304 x 1440 pixels (WUXGA+), supporting 16 million colours. It has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 90Hz, a maximum brightness of 600 nits and an outdoor brightness of 720 nits in High Brightness Mode. Samsung also lists Vision Booster for sunlit conditions, DCI-P3 colour coverage and an SGS Low Blue Light certification. The 10.9-inch panel is about 27.7 cm measured diagonally, and Samsung notes that the visible area is slightly smaller because of rounded corners and the camera hole.
As with the larger model, this is an LCD panel rather than the AMOLED screen in the Tab S9 series. Colours are vivid and text is sharp, but black levels and contrast are not at OLED standard, and the 90Hz rate is below the 120Hz of the flagship. For video, reading, browsing and note-taking it is a solid screen, though a visibly better one exists higher in the range.
Performance, memory and software
The processor is the Samsung Exynos 1380, an octa-core chip with two cores at 2.4GHz and six at 2GHz. It is a mid-range design intended for multitasking, streaming and casual games. The base model has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, of which Samsung lists about 99.9GB as available to the user; an 8GB and 256GB configuration is also offered, depending on region. A microSD slot supports cards up to 1TB, which is a clear advantage over the flagship models for storing media or large drawing files.
The tablet shipped with Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1. Samsung's page highlights Circle to Search with Google, family accounts with parental controls and DeX mode through the optional Book Cover Keyboard, which adds function keys and a trackpad for a more PC-like experience. Note-taking is a central use case: Samsung Notes and Goodnotes are optimised for the S Pen, and the pen is compatible with the S Pen Creator Edition, which is sold separately. Check Samsung's current update policy for your region before assuming a specific number of years of support.
Cameras, audio and connectivity
Camera hardware is basic by design: one 8MP rear camera without flash and a 12MP front camera for video calls. Video recording tops out at 4K at 30 frames per second. This is a tablet for scanning documents and conferencing rather than photography. The speakers are stereo units tuned by AKG. Wireless features include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and GPS with several satellite systems. The USB Type-C port runs at USB 2.0 speeds, there is no NFC, and the fingerprint sensor is on the side.
Battery and charging
The typical battery capacity is 8,000 mAh. Samsung quotes up to 16 hours of internet use over Wi-Fi, up to 18 hours of video playback and up to 113 hours of audio playback, all from laboratory conditions. The tablet supports Super Fast Charging with a suitable adapter. It can also act as a power source for a compatible Galaxy phone through a USB-C cable at up to 15W while its own screen is off and its battery is above 30 percent, according to Samsung's footnote. Real-life endurance depends on brightness, refresh rate and the apps you run.
Who it is for
The Tab S9 FE suits students, readers and note-takers who want an easy-to-carry tablet with a pen included, expandable storage and a sturdy rating, and who do not need the best possible screen. Families will appreciate the child-account controls and the durability, while commuters will like the lighter weight compared with the 12.4-inch model. If you often watch films or work with two apps side by side, the larger FE+ gives more room; otherwise this size is easier to live with. You can look through all tablets on the site, or open the rankings to see where it lands.
Compromises to consider
- LCD panel: not as deep or bright as the AMOLED screens in the Tab S9 line.
- Mid-range chip: fine for everyday use, less suited to demanding games or heavy video editing.
- One basic rear camera: adequate for documents, not for photography.
- USB 2.0 and no NFC: slower cable transfers and fewer tap-to-connect options.
- Age: a 2023 model, so software support and newer alternatives deserve a look.
In summary, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE gives you a handy 10.9-inch 90Hz tablet with IP68 protection, an included S Pen and an 8,000 mAh battery for less than the flagship, with an LCD screen and mid-range processor as the trade-offs.
