The Garmin Enduro 3 is a solar-charging GPS smartwatch built for ultra-endurance athletes: people who run, ride or hike for many hours at a time and need a watch that will not run out of power half way through. Garmin announced it on 27 August 2024 with a suggested retail price of $899.99 in the United States and described it as an ultraperformance watch with best-in-class solar battery life. The headline numbers are up to 90 days in smartwatch mode and up to 320 hours in GPS mode with solar charging, delivered in a 51 mm case that weighs 63 g. This page reviews the published specifications and Garmin's own descriptions, marks battery and performance figures as the manufacturer's claims under stated test conditions, and explains who the watch suits and where it asks for compromises.

Where it sits in the Garmin lineup

Garmin's outdoor and multisport range is crowded, and the Enduro line occupies a particular corner of it: the longest battery life, the lightest case and a feature set weighted towards ultra-distance running, trail running and long events. Garmin's all-round premium outdoor line is the Fenix family, and the Enduro is the sibling that puts weight and battery life first. For comparison with that sibling line, see the Garmin Fenix 8 and, for a newer generation of Fenix, the Fenix 9. Runners who prefer a more compact, running-focused watch can look at the Forerunner 970. The Garmin Enduro 4 has its own page on this site, and the Enduro 3 versus Fenix 8 comparison shows how the two lines differ in specifications.

Design, case and display

The case is 51 x 51 x 15.7 mm, built from fibre-reinforced polymer with a titanium bezel and a Power Sapphire lens. Garmin gives the weight as 63 g, with 57 g for the case alone, which it highlights as light for a watch of this size and battery capacity. The product page shows the Carbon Gray DLC Titanium version with a black UltraFit nylon strap, an ultra-lightweight elastic hook-and-loop band that Garmin says fits wrists from 127 to 225 mm in circumference. The case is compatible with 26 mm QuickFit bands, so other straps can be swapped in. Water resistance is rated 10 ATM, which covers swimming and other water sports. A set of physical buttons and a lime-green accent button on the side are visible in the official images.

The display is a 1.4-inch (35.56 mm) round, sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel panel with a resolution of 280 x 280 pixels, and Garmin says that it stays on at all times. Memory-in-pixel displays are the foundation of the long battery life: they reflect ambient light rather than relying on a bright backlight and consume very little power, and in direct sun they actually become easier to read. The trade-off is that they look less vivid and sharp than AMOLED screens, particularly indoors, and the 280 x 280 resolution is modest. Garmin chose a display that suits the job of the watch rather than competing on screen showiness.

Battery and solar charging

Battery life is the reason the Enduro 3 exists. Garmin lists up to 36 days in smartwatch mode, extended to up to 90 days with solar charging, and up to 92 days in its battery-saver watch mode, which becomes unlimited with solar. In GPS-only mode the watch lasts up to 120 hours, or up to 320 hours with solar charging. With all satellite systems it lasts up to 80 hours, or 144 hours with solar; with all systems plus multi-band it lasts up to 60 hours, or 90 hours with solar; with music it lasts up to 22 hours; in Max Battery GPS mode up to 210 hours, or unlimited with solar; and in Expedition GPS mode up to 77 days, or unlimited with solar.

Garmin attaches conditions to the solar figures: they assume all-day wear with three hours a day outdoors in 50,000 lux conditions for watch modes, and continuous use in 50,000 lux conditions for the GPS figures. In other words, the best numbers apply to bright, sunny outdoor conditions, and results in cloudy weather, long winter nights or when the watch sits under a sleeve will be lower. Garmin also says that the solar lens is larger and more efficient than before, giving more than double the solar power of the previous Enduro model. Charging when needed uses Garmin's proprietary plug charger.

Navigation and positioning

The Enduro 3 supports multi-band GPS along with other satellite systems, and Garmin's SatIQ technology switches between GPS modes automatically to balance accuracy and battery use. The watch comes with preloaded TopoActive maps showing terrain contours, plus maps for thousands of golf courses and ski resorts. Garmin highlights dynamic round-trip routing for runs, rides and hikes, NextFork map guides that show distance to the next intersection and the trail name, turn-by-turn directions on courses created in Garmin Connect, and "up ahead" alerts for selected checkpoints such as aid stations. An optional Outdoor Maps+ subscription adds satellite imagery and enhanced topographic maps. With 32 GB of storage the watch has room for maps and music.

Training and health features

Garmin positions the Enduro 3 as a training tool for long events. Features it names include trail-run VO2 max, grade-adjusted pace, training load, heat and altitude acclimation, PacePro pace guidance and ClimbPro climb information on downloaded courses. An Ultrarun activity includes a rest timer and logs time at aid stations. The watch also lists training readiness and training status, and the official images show an Endurance Score screen. The press material also lists four- to six-week strength training plans, sport-specific workouts and animated cardio, strength, yoga and Pilates workouts, which acknowledges that endurance athletes also need strength work. Preloaded activity profiles cover swimming, cycling, golf and skiing as well as running.

On the health side the watch records heart rate, resting heart rate and respiration, and supports heart rate variability status, Pulse Ox, advanced sleep tracking, a sleep coach, jet lag advice, Body Battery energy monitoring and all-day stress. It includes an ECG app that Garmin states is cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration for checking for signs of atrial fibrillation; the company notes that it is not intended for users under 22 and is not available in all regions. A built-in LED flashlight offers variable intensity, a red light and a strobe mode, which is a practical feature for night running and camp use.

Smart features

The watch shows smartphone notifications, supports Garmin Pay for contactless payments, and can store music from Spotify, Deezer or Amazon Music if you have a premium subscription. Garmin Messenger allows two-way text messaging with other app users, Garmin Share sends saved locations, courses and workouts to compatible devices, and safety features include incident detection, assistance and LiveTrack. These smartphone-linked features work together with a paired phone.

Who it is for

The Enduro 3 is designed for ultrarunners, long-distance trail athletes, bikepackers, multi-day hikers and expedition users who value battery life above everything else and who want a light watch on the wrist for hours at a time. It also suits people who simply dislike charging and want a watch that can go weeks between plugs. The topographic maps, navigation tools and flashlight add to its usefulness outdoors.

Compromises

The price of $899.99 is high, placing it in the territory of premium outdoor watches. The memory-in-pixel display, while efficient, is less vibrant than the AMOLED panels used by many competing watches. The headline battery figures depend on strong sunlight and Garmin's stated test conditions. The case, though light, is large at 51 mm, and may feel big on smaller wrists even though the strap range is wide. Several features, including Outdoor Maps+, music streaming services and the full value of Garmin Connect, depend on subscriptions or a paired phone. Readers who want to see how the watch compares with other devices can check the rankings.

Based on the published specifications and manufacturer information, the Garmin Enduro 3 is a specialised, expensive and very capable endurance watch. Its battery numbers, preloaded maps and training tools are aimed squarely at people who spend many hours outdoors, and it asks them to accept a larger case and a less colourful display in return.
