The Garmin Instinct 3 series was announced on 6 January 2025 as Garmin's newest lineup of rugged smartwatches, and the headline is in the title of the press release: "now with AMOLED displays". The series comes in two display flavours, AMOLED and solar, and both are offered in two sizes. This page is based on Garmin's press release. We mark manufacturer claims as such and list at the end what the release leaves unanswered.
Two displays, two sizes
Both the AMOLED and the solar options come in 45 mm and 50 mm. Garmin says the AMOLED models last up to 24 days on a single charge in smartwatch mode, while the solar charging models can get "unlimited" battery life. The footnote attached to the solar claim assumes all-day wear with three hours a day outside in 50,000 lux conditions. In other words, unlimited describes a very outdoorsy routine. Garmin also says that a larger, more efficient solar lens lets the new 50 mm Instinct 3 Solar get more than five times the battery life in GPS mode when solar charging, compared with the Instinct 2 Solar. That comparison is between two solar watches, so it does not tell you how the AMOLED model behaves in GPS mode.
Colours and design
The colourways include Black and Black/Charcoal, plus bright options named Neotropic and Neotropic/Twilight that are part of a new, limited-edition Tropical Pulse Collection. The design pitch is "rugged yet bold", and Garmin describes the limited-edition colours as trendy. Garmin's quote in the release, from Dan Bartel, Garmin's Vice President of Global Consumer Sales, describes it as the smartwatch you can wear whenever and wherever.
What makes it tough
The Instinct 3 adds a metal-reinforced bezel to a fiber-reinforced polymer case and a scratch-resistant display. Garmin says it is built to MIL-STD 810 for thermal and shock resistance and is water-rated to 100 metres. The other durability-adjacent change is the flashlight: a built-in LED flashlight is now available on all Instinct 3 models, with variable intensities, a red light and a strobe mode. Garmin's examples are exploring caves, rummaging through a gear pack and telling stories around a campfire. The release does not list a sapphire lens or titanium as options for this series. The launch prices are far below those of the fenix line.
Health and daily use
Health monitoring covers steps, heart rate, advanced sleep monitoring, wrist-based Pulse Ox, and heart rate variability status. Women's health tracking lets users track a menstrual cycle and pregnancy, with exercise and nutrition information. A morning report summarises last night's sleep, the day's calendar and HRV status. Garmin's footnote says Pulse Ox is not a medical device and is not available in all countries, and that activity tracking accuracy details are on its site. Everyday features include smart notifications from a paired Apple or Android smartphone, Garmin Pay contactless payments at select checkouts and transit systems through participating providers, and Garmin Share for sending saved locations, courses and workouts to nearby compatible Garmin smartwatches and Edge cycling computers. The Garmin Messenger app allows two-way text messaging from the watch when paired with a compatible smartphone, and both sender and receiver need the app.
Navigation and outdoor tools
The Instinct 3 has multi-band GPS with SatIQ, which Garmin says gives superior positioning accuracy while optimising battery life. TracBack routing provides a route back to the starting point together with reference points of known spots, and the altimeter, barometer and 3-axis electronic compass can be used to navigate a trail. Pairing with the Garmin Explore app lets users review more detailed maps, create waypoints and courses. Sports apps include hiking, running, cycling, golfing, fishing and skiing, plus HIIT, cardio, indoor and outdoor track running, pickleball and basketball.
Training
Garmin Coach adaptive and prebuilt training plans for running and cycling are included, along with a week of daily suggested workouts that adapt after every run or ride. Users can build step-by-step workouts from more than 1,600 exercises in the Garmin Connect app and send them to the watch. Intensity minutes, VO2 max and recovery time are tracked to give guidance on recovery and to reduce fatigue and burnout. Safety features when paired with a compatible phone include incident detection, assistance and LiveTrack.
Where it sits next to the fenix 8
Because Garmin published both releases, a few contrasts are safe to state. The fenix 8 release describes a built-in speaker and microphone for calls and voice commands, optional titanium and sapphire, preloaded TopoActive maps on sapphire models and a 40 metre dive rating; the Instinct 3 release describes a flashlight, a metal-reinforced bezel on a polymer case, TracBack routing and 100 metre water rating, and does not mention a speaker or microphone. The fenix 8 AMOLED battery claim was up to 29 days for its largest case, against up to 24 days here, although the release does not say which Instinct size that figure applies to. The Instinct 3 is therefore the simpler, cheaper tool, not a smaller fenix.
Price and availability
Garmin said the Instinct 3 would be available to order on Garmin.com on 10 January 2025, with suggested retail prices starting at 449.99 US dollars for AMOLED models and 399.99 dollars for the solar charging models. The watches were shown at CES 2025. Compared with the fenix line, which starts at 999.99 dollars for the fenix 8, that is a much lower entry point.
What is not in the announcement
The release does not give screen resolution or brightness for the AMOLED model, weights, thicknesses, memory for music, a full list of dive or depth features, or whether the GPS battery figure for AMOLED models matches the solar ones. It also makes no direct comparison with the fenix line. If you are deciding between sizes, remember that the 45 mm and 50 mm cases were quoted with different battery behaviour and that the solar claims assume good sunshine.
Who should look at it
The Instinct 3 is for people who want a tough, bright-coloured, long-lasting outdoor watch and do not need the premium materials or the price of the fenix line. Compare it with the Garmin fenix 8 if you want more mapping and titanium options, or the connected Garmin fenix 8 Pro if you want satellite messaging. Runners may prefer the Garmin Forerunner 570, and iPhone owners can view the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Browse everything in smartwatches.
